Huawei continues to create problems for Apple in the Chinese smartphone sales sector. A research organization says that after 46 months of struggle and challenges, Huawei smartphone sales in China have surpassed the iPhone maker this year.

CINNO Research has released a new report entitled “After 46 months, Huawei Chinese smartphone sales exceeded Apple again in August 2024.” The report reveals the current status of the smartphone market in China and the top rankers.

The report highlights the overview of the smartphone market based on the monthly development trend in September 2024. It covers the sales volume, brand analysis, and the top smartphone brand that has been on the top in the last few months.

Inputs reveal that Huawei has given a tough fight to the Apple iPhone sales in China after 46 months. The company’s market share in the Chinese high-end smartphones (above 6000 yuan) has been gradually increasing due to new creations.

Huawei’s sharp rise in market share is ultimately putting more pressure on Apple. The US tech giant is already declining in the Chinese phone market. Meanwhile, heavy competition from Chinese rivals is pushing Apple further back in the ranking.

Mate 60 series launched last year, resulted in immense popularity – thanks to the Kirin 5G chip and the satellite calling feature. The previous-gen models led to booming sales which once again increased the brand’s value in the Chinese smartphone business.

After four years of hustles, Huawei topped the Chinese smartphone market in Q1 2024 with a sales increase of 110% YoY. The report further states that the company won the tag of No.1 in H1 2024 Chinese smartphone sales with a market share of 17.5%.

Huawei has also launched new phones like Pocket 2, Pura 70 series, and Nova Flip which increased the company’s sales revenue this year. Also, the Mate 70 series is in the pipeline and expected to add a new hike in the brand’s sales section.

Apple is reportedly planning to launch a low-cost iPhone that might help it regain its market shares from Huawei. The American tech giant is making efforts to win back its customers in one of its major markets, after losing them to Chinese competitors.

The iPhone maker has given us some of the best products so far. The firm is also doing well in global markets. However, its sales in the Chinese market dropped significantly due to stiff competition from Huawei and others.

China, on the other hand, aims to support its local products over foreign ones. Many Chinese firms even prohibit the use of Apple products and encourage their employees to buy Huawei devices, contributing to the country’s economy. Read More…

Thus, Apple is planning to regain its customers and market share from rivals like Huawei and Xiaomi by launching a low-cost iPhone. The device is an iPhone SE which may debut in the first quarter of 2025, probably with the Apple Intelligence support.

The new iPhone SE will likely eliminate the outdated home button. It is said to sport a modern design at a budget-friendly rate. Other features and key specs of the device are unknown. But we may grab more details about it in the upcoming days.

A few analysts suggest that the inexpensive iPhone could help Apple to make a new stand in the Chinese phone market. The company’s overall revenue (89-96%) in 2025 will depend on iPhone sales and the SE model may help in regaining shares.

Further inputs reveal some iPad upgrades for the next year. It seems the tech giant is planning to make new scores in the Chinese tablet market alongside the smartphone section. For the last three quarters, the company has been running back from Huawei.

China’s Railway 12306 has adapted to the official HarmonyOS native app version and is ready for public testing. It supports several new capabilities as well as significant features. These additions make the app more useful and efficient for customers.

Railway 12306 completed the HarmonyOS native app beta in April this year. Now, the company has launched its official HarmonyOS NEXT-based app version.

Inputs reveal that the Railway 12306 HarmonyOS native app version is ready to download and testing. But it is currently only available to HarmonyOS NEXT beta users. Others probably have to wait till October 8 to grab more details on this matter.

Speaking of the features, the Railway 12306 app supports various essential tools that make the journey more convenient. One of the useful features is trip scheduling.

As the name suggests, users can schedule the ticket information on a calendar, directly from the app. After booking the ticket, the user can tap the ‘Add to Calendar’ tool in the upper right corner of the page. The feature will generate scheduled information on the calendar with details like ticket date and departure time.

It will further remind users of this date to stay prepared before the departure. The app supports a new multi-security services system (based on HarmonyOS NEXT). This system ensures the safety of users’ information. It also checks if the information is coming from real users and devices or is based on scams.

Railway 12306 app is also expected to support the HarmonyOS live window feature in the future. As a result, users can check the real-time status of the train’s arrival and relevant info without even opening the app. Though you need to book a ticket first.

Thus, users will get a more practical and convenient experience throughout the train travel. More details about the app will go official after its launch for all device users.

China is now pressuring its companies to purchase Huawei and other local AI chips instead of Nvidia H20. The Chinese authorities are taking this measure to counter the tough U.S. trade restrictions and support the native semiconductor industry.

As noted by Bloomberg, Chinese regulators directed local firms and enterprise customers to prohibit Nvidia H20 usage. The H20 is a China-specific chip. It’s a special but low-end version of the Nvidia H800. The chip is used to train AI models.

Following the U.S. ban, Chinese companies relied on Nvidia’s chipsets for AI models and other related technologies. However, China now aims to support its native techs and firms over U.S. products, increasing its self-reliance and economic growth.

Inputs reveal that Chinese regulators like the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology issued a set of new rules under ‘window guidance’. It encourages the firms to switch to local chipmakers and reduce the Nvidia use as far as possible.

Huawei and Cambricon are currently the top AI chipmakers in China. A direct prohibition of Nvidia chips in the region will ultimately help the native chip producers to increase their market share. The aim is to support native AI startups over foreign firms.

People related to the matter say that it’s not possible to completely ban Nvidia chips in the region. Many companies are looking to develop the best AI system which requires foreign processors instead of local options. But the condition is that the Nvidia chips’ usage should be minimal.

Another input notes that Nvidia shares fell to 3.9% ($119.26) by Friday. When asked to the CEO of Nvidia – Jensen Huang about the entire matter, he said:

“The first thing we have to do is comply with whatever policies and regulations that are being imposed. And, meanwhile, do the best we can to compete in the markets that we serve. We have a lot of customers there that depend on us, and we’ll do our best to support them.”

While Chinese chipmakers are readying alternatives to Nvidia’s chips, local companies are stockpiling foreign chips before the U.S. export controls reach a new level. For instance, ByteDance ordered 200000+ Nvidia H20 chips this year worth $2 billion.

Huawei, on the other hand, is also taking major steps in this matter. After months of internal testing, the company is now sending its Ascend 910C AI chip samples to top tech firms, expanding its strength in the AI chip sector. Read More…

It would be worth seeing how the next-gen Huawei AI chips will counterattack Nvidia H20 processors.

Huawei has been outperforming Apple in the Chinese tablet shipments for two consecutive quarters and this victory continued in Q2 2024 as well. A new report says the MatePad maker shipped 20.5 million tablets in the second quarter of this year.

Earlier IDC reported that Huawei tablet shipments increased to 46.9% in the Q2 2024 Chinese market. Now Canalys revealed the exact figure of tablets sold by the brand.

According to the report, Huawei has made 20.5 million tablet shipments in the Chinese market for Q2 2024. The company has ranked first in this race, defeating tech makers like Apple, Xiaomi, and Honor. It also holds 26% of the market share.

The tech giant has succeeded in shipments and market share compared to last year. The new shipment figure further boosted the company’s annual growth by 66%.

Canalys notes that the Chinese tablet market has become highly competitive due to local tech vendors like Huawei. The company has already introduced various MatePad products this year. The latest one is the dual-layer OLED MatePad Pro 12.2 which is getting immense support and attention from consumers.

Apple has followed Huawei in the second spot and shipped around 20.1 million tablets in the region. While the market share is similar to Huawei, the iPad maker is seeing a 14% decline in the annual growth.

Xiaomi has ranked third with 9.25 million tablet shipments and 12% of the market share. Honor belongs to the fourth position. The company shipped 6.5 million tablets and obtained an 8% share in the Chinese tablet market. It has scored 63% YoY growth.

Lenovo grabbed the fifth place with an annual progress of 12%. It has sold 4.9 million tablets and owns 6% of the market share. Apart from the top 5 rankers, Canalys says that the Chinese tablet market has shipped around 7.8 million tablets this quarter. The overall sales increased by 20% – thanks to online promotions.

The market research firm expects that the Chinese tablet market will further grow by 9% this year. Meanwhile, tech vendors will use more AI features to attract customers.

Analyst Emma Xu says:

“To drive stronger business outcomes, vendors must focus on market expansion and differentiation to enhance user experiences. Leveraging on-device AI models will be particularly beneficial in this regard.”

Huawei Mate 70 series will soon step into the real world. The flagship lineup is getting support from all sides to result in huge success. But it seems a few Chinese suppliers including SMIC may face profit risks amid Huawei Mate 70 launch preparations.

According to DigiTimesAsia, the Huawei Mate 70 series is getting full support in China ahead of its official unveiling. The upcoming smartphone lineup is backed by government and financial support to avoid any issues during or after its launch.

But some Chinese suppliers including SMIC are on the verge of sacrificing profit due to the Huawei Mate 70 series. Inputs reveal that the chipmaker’s revenue for the fourth quarter of this year may slightly decline from the previous quarter.

A major reason behind this decline is the year-end seasonality. In other words, the chip manufacturing firm faces certain fluctuations during this period every year.

Despite the profit risk, SMIC is also working to build a more refined and efficient version of the Kirin chip for the Mate 70 series. The company is in rumors to seed a 5nm processor in the next Mate devices that can boost the performance significantly.

SMIC has also been blacklisted by the U.S. authorities. As a result, the firm is making 7nm chips fabricated on outdated DUV machines. Due to the ban, the company cannot access advanced chipmaking tools to build better and upgraded processors.

However, reports said that SMIC has laid the production lines for a 5nm chip at the outset of this year. The alleged chip has entered the small-scale production already and claims to improve the power efficiency. Read More

The accuracy of this news is still a question. But following these hints, SMIC could risk profit to supply Kirin chips to Huawei Mate 70 models. If true, this risk could turn into a huge success as a 5nm chip would be a breakthrough for the Chinese semiconductor industry.

Huawei commercial PC – Qingyun L540 teardown proves China is moving toward self-reliance. Chinese companies are trying to reduce their dependency on foreign components for their products and use native technologies to the maximum.

In a recent teardown of Huawei Qingyun L540 commercial PC, the device is said to run mainly on Chinese components, implying self-reliance. It uses a self-developed Kirin 9006C 5nm chipset and the China-made Unity operating system.

According to the FinancialTimes, Huawei Qingyun L540 commercial PC is in high demand among Chinese enterprises. The government sectors and state groups are widely using the device for its high-end capabilities and performance efficiency.

Qingyun L540 PC is now also part of a Chinese localization campaign named Xinchuang (IT application innovation). This campaign is a Chinese policy that works on localizing the regional IT sector and turning down its dependency on foreign products.

The report further reveals that Chinese companies like Huawei continue to ramp up their R&D efforts in chips, machinery, and software. They believe these products are the “technological backbone” for independent, secure, and controllable supply chains.

Other than that, the Chinese firms are also supporting the native products with financial support. The Chinese government has instructed most industries to prohibit foreign goods or components usage to the maximum.

Since March 2024, many enterprises have abandoned Intel and AMD-powered laptops in favor of Huawei, Shanghai Zhaoxin, and Phytium PCs. Qingyun L540 has the largest count of orders in this context.

Huawei PC teardown self-reliance

Notably, the idea of using Chinese products over foreign tech has resulted in a wide range of products. Chinese users and enterprise customers now have various options in the market to choose their desired technology, device, or any other product.

Automobiles

Apart from chips and software, China has directed its automakers including the European group partners to increase the use of Chinese chips. The aim is to use around 25% of Chinese chips in automobiles by the next year.

With maximum use of local components in new products and cut-off of foreign tech, China aims to gradually become more self-dependent in every technological aspect.
