Honor CEO – Zhao Ming recently revealed that his company faced a lot of pressure and challenges after separating from Huawei. The executive sees Huawei as a strong brand power in the Chinese market and aims to compete with it in a fair means.

Zhao Ming talked about Honor and Huawei in a livestream interview. The official said that Honor has cut off its relationship with Huawei in a far better way than any other company. But this separation initially brought many challenges.

The CEO mentioned that his original family (Huawei + Honor) has been successful. Although after being separated from the parent firm, Honor felt immense pressure.

It had to begin everything from scratch. The biggest challenge for Honor executives was to manage those operations that they were completely unaware of.

Why separated?

After the U.S. banned Huawei in 2019, the company sold its subsidiary firm Honor to Shenzhen Zhixin New Information Technology in November 2020. The aim was to prevent Honor from the drawbacks of the ban and enable it to operate freely.

The beginning was quite tough for Honor. The company was under pressure to meet consumers’ expectations with better products. Yet it managed the difficult times and came out with flying colors.

Zhao Ming further spoke on comparisons of Honor with Huawei and Apple. According to him, Honor feels pressure while competing with tech giants. Yet, the company remains calm and continues to explore new ways that can benefit its consumers.

“When communicating with backbones and supervisors, everyone said that we are leading, but we always feel a lot of pressure. We have three big mountains. The objects we compare with are not Apple today, but Huawei tomorrow.”

Zhao Ming states that he tries to see positivity in every aspect. The official once said that despite pressure and challenges, Honor made a separate identity from Huawei. The company is constantly achieving success and aims to offer more improved and innovative products in the future.

A Chinese computer scientist – Sun Ninghui calls Huawei business model a monopolistic in the U.S. tech war. According to him, China can’t win this battle against foreign technologies by only relying on “anti-competitive” and closed solutions.

Sun Ninghui is one of the prominent computer scientists in China. He is also a researcher and director at the Institute of Computing Technology, Chinese Academy of Sciences. In one of his recent speeches, the person reportedly criticized Huawei.

He says that Huawei’s business development model seems quite closed and monopolistic. The company’s dominance in the industrial sector as well as the technological chain won’t help China stand against the U.S. in the technology race.

“From chip manufacturing to software to large AI models to computing power networks, it’s best for everyone else not to participate, and Huawei will take over everything. I think we are using this kind of Chinese-style closure and monopoly to fight Western-style monopoly and containment, which we certainly can’t win.”

Another industry computer expert shared the same point saying that the dominance of one tech firm in the region hinders a healthy innovation ecosystem.

The expert gave the example of Samsung’s dominance in South Korea that obstructed the country’s overall tech progress. Although that’s just one side of the coin!

A Chinese investor shed light on this matter saying that the problem isn’t as serious as Sun has pictured it to individuals. He says that China is currently focusing on collecting resources with the help of large companies. After attaining success on this matter, it won’t be a big deal to address monopoly issues in the region.

Perhaps the familiar Chinese scientist has criticized Huawei business models in the US tech war, due to some other reasons.

Criticism due to conflict?

Xiang Ligang – a tech analyst said that Sun has openly criticized Huawei due to a business conflict. He said that a few scientists working with Sun are upset due to successful firms like Huawei, as their products aren’t a part of the world’s top ranking anymore.

The analyst further noted that Sun has called Huawei monopolistic as it has no way of proving the strength of its supercomputers. They often call their rivals incapable or weak in practical and commercial value. Xiang also mentioned that Huawei is growing after facing challenges and being choked by others.

Huawei smartphone revenue has touched new heights in H1 2024. The tech giant has generated a net profit of $7.7 billion in the first half of this year – thanks to the booming 5G phone sales. The company has also earned profit in other business units.

As per the details, Huawei recorded the highest revenue growth after 2020, the same period. The company has been slammed by the U.S. ban due to security concerns which ultimately pushed it down in the market. But the situation is finally favorable.

Inputs reveal that Huawei smartphone revenue for H1 2024 has surged the net profit to 18%, resulting in $7.7 billion (54.9 billion yuan). The company has made 417.5 billion yuan in revenue from January to July 2024, which is a rise of 34.3% YoY.

Last Year…

Compared to last year’s same period, Huawei’s total revenue for the first-half sales has jumped from 310.9 billion yuan to 417.5 billion yuan ($58.6 billion).

Huawei didn’t reveal the exact figure for every business unit. But a company’s spokesperson said that Huawei’s phones, notebooks, and tablets, performed extremely well in the consumer market and remained at the top of the demands list.

In the first half of this year, the company sold around 22.2 million phones in China which is a hike of 55.2% from the last year’s sales. This progress made Huawei enter the top 5 rankers in the smartphone business. Apart from devices, the smart car solutions unit has also received immense support in the consumer world.

Despite the U.S. trade export controls and advanced chip production issues, the company is reaching new heights day by day. After the Mate 60 Pro, the OEM introduced devices like Pura 70 models and MateBook X Pro that raised the bar of innovation.

The Rotating Chairman of Huawei – Eric Xu says:

“Our overall performance was in line with expectations. Moving forward, we will continue driving high quality across all business processes, optimizing our portfolio to enhance business resilience, and building thriving ecosystems. Ultimately, our goal is to provide customers with even more competitive products and solutions.”

SERES is planning to invest in Huawei smart car solutions business, as per a new report. The carmaker is looking to buy shares of Shenzhen Yinwang Intelligent Technology. If the deal gets penned, the respective firm will become a subsidiary of SERES.

Huawei established the Yinwang Intelligent Technology in January 2024 with a capital of 1 billion yuan. It targets the production and sales of smart car solutions, equipment, spare parts, and other components required to develop an electric vehicle.

The report reveals that SERES shared its investment plan yesterday. The automaker is already talking with Yinwang Intelligent Tech on this topic. A major aim of the investment is to raise the Shenzhen firm and make it a better smart car solution company.

AITO maker also hopes to see Yinwang Technology as an open solution provider for its smart cars. In this way, SERES will get more help to build better automobiles and could soon become the leader in intelligent driving systems as well as advanced auto parts.

Inputs further reveal that the new deal will lead Yinwang to become the subsidiary of the SERES. But this agreement won’t change the scope of combined accounts.

Another piece of information on this topic states SERES market value increased by 2 billion after its plan to invest in Huawei smart car solutions went online. The 5.3% share immediately touched the 6.4% bar this morning on the trading screen.

The story began last year when Huawei called out its automobile partners to buy shares in its automotive solutions business. After months, SERES appeared as the first to lead in this subject. However, the automaker has not disclosed the amount yet.

In November 2023, the Chinese tech giant joined forces with Changan Auto for “Investment Cooperation”. Following this cooperation, SERES also mentioned that it obtained an invitation to acquire shares and has initiated a discussion on it with Huawei.

Now SERES seems ready to enter this cooperation. As per the reports, the company confirmed the new plan via a document surfing on the internet.

Huawei smart car solution business reportedly collected $1.38 billion in sales revenue for H1 2024. If the news is accurate, this is the biggest revenue for the company’s automotive sector. The amount is equal to the revenue of the past 2 years combined.

36Kr Auto reports that the Huawei smart car solution business unit is seeing a sales revenue of 10 billion yuan in H1 2024. The collection is as of early July this year.

Details from Huawei’s annual reports show the company earned 2.1 billion yuan and 4.7 billion yuan in 2022 and 2023 respectively. But the current figure is just the double of these revenues. It seems the firm’s automotive business started turning a profit.

Huawei has reportedly gained “far ahead” revenue in the first half of this year, compared to the revenue combo of the past two years. But there’s a big catch.

When contacted Huawei to verify the news, the company said that one should refer to the official authoritative information for financial details. Thus, the accuracy of this report is still uncertain. Things will get clear when the OEM announces this news.

If true, Huawei might have gained most of the benefit from the AITO brand. As per some details, the HIMA (Harmony Intelligent Mobility Alliance) sold over 190000 SERES AITO SUVs in the first half of 2024. It’s 90% of smart vehicles under the HIMA umbrella.

During an event, the Chairman of the Huawei Automotive Solutions Business Unit – Yu Chengdong said that its car business turned a profit in the first quarter of 2024. There is more achievement to come in the way. Yet an official confirmation awaits on this subject.

On July 15, 2024, Huawei Consumer Business Group Chairman Yu Chengdong held a live stream with Dong Yuhui (Influencer). During his interview, he revealed how Huawei went through tough times due to U.S. ban but didn’t lose hope to recover its business.

The Chairman said that the company has dealt with incredibly difficult days. After Huawei was blacklisted by the U.S. government for being a “security risk”, it faced many challenges in both the native regions as well as the global smartphone market.

Regardless a global 5G leader, the company has been even banned from using 5G chips for its own handsets. The Huawei smartphone business slowed down following export trade restrictions on chipmaking tools and other advanced equipment.

Yu further said that there was a time when the company sold only 20 million units per year. It was so as Huawei didn’t have better techs or chip tools back in 2022.

“My team wasn’t able to start operations. As the global leader in 5G technology, we didn’t even have 5G phones ourselves. Our days were incredibly difficult” – says Yu Chengdong.

In 2019, the Chinese tech giant sold around 240 million units of smartphones globally. However, that same year, the U.S. imposed sanctions on the company, which led to a drop in its smartphone business. The ban’s impact on the company is still visible.

Although Huawei Chairman expects its business to recover amid the U.S. ban. The company is constantly making efforts to rejuvenate its smartphone business in both China and global markets. In this case, Mate 60 Pro appears as a turning point.

Huawei introduced Mate 60 Pro with Kirin 5G chipset last year. Since then, the company didn’t stop new Kirin chips production. Pura 70 Ultra is another example that runs on Kirin 9010 chip and this trend will probably continue with Mate 70 flagship.

Yu Chengdong also said that Huawei phones and other products are contributing to China’s growth. Consumers purchasing these devices also play a role in lifting China’s electronics supply chain and reducing the country’s dependency on foreign goods.

Huawei could raise the smartphone shipment bar in China to 50 million units this year, as per analysts. To do so, the company is trying its best in every way. Whether it’s HarmonyOS software capabilities or the new R&D Center establishment in Shanghai.

It would be worth seeing how Huawei takes on new achievements amid U.S. restrictions and several trade challenges.

A new report reveals that Yu Chengdong, one of the senior executives in Huawei will no longer serve as the CEO but as the Chairman of the Device Business Group. The OEM made some adjustments to its personnel management for better growth.

Details by @36Krypton reveal that the former Chief Operating Officer (COO) of Huawei Device Group – He Gang will now take over the responsibilities of the CEO position.

The official document shows that Huawei never had a Chairman for its Device Business Group, which encouraged it to initiate such a post in the device work line.

Hence Yu Chengdong has stepped down from the CEO position and will sit on the Chairman seat of the Huawei Device Business. People related to the company said that changes are normal and nothing special in a company’s senior executive’s life.

Note that this promotion has simply expanded Yu’s scope of duties in the company. Yu Chengdong will now have to look after as the Managing Director, Chairman of Device Business, Chairman of smart car solutions, and Director of IRB (Investment Review Board) for smart devices and car components.

New Responsibilities

From just seeing the responsibilities of the device consumer business to moving on to a higher-level decision-making post, Richard Yu will now have more duties than before.

Yu Chengdong joined Huawei in 1993 as a 3G Product Director, the Vice President of the Wireless Technical Sales Department, and several other positions. Richard Yu continues to be an important part of the company, focusing on both phone and automobile solution business.

Huawei recently disclosed its 2023 Annual Report which states that the company has settled its contractual rights, obligations, and sale of the Honor business. Things were associated between both parties via a supplementary agreement made in 2023.

The 2023 Annual Report also mentions that Huawei has sold its Honor business and server-related subsidiaries. Revelations say that the sale takes place in installments. Although the overall sale amount in this aspect is still unconfirmed for now.

The story began in November 2020 when Huawei made a deal with the Shenzhen Zhixin New Information Technology Co. Ltd. of over 30 agents and dealers in China. Here, the Chinese tech maker sold off its Honor smartphone business.

After the completion of this sale, the Kirin chipmaker did not have any right to hold shares in the new Honor smartphone company. Now Huawei has fully finalized the contractual rights and sale of the Honor business, as of the 2023 annual report.

It is worth mentioning that Huawei decided to sell the Honor brand and make it a self-dependent firm due to the pressure of the U.S. sanctions. The parent firm addressed the problems faced by the subsidiary company amid restrictions.

This has been a safe move from Huawei to shield Honor from strict trade regulations. It also wanted Honor to have access to vital supplies without any issues.

Further report details mention that the financial stuff and objects of this sale will be marked under fair value with cash receipts. These slips will be showcased in the investing procedure under the consolidated statement of cash flows. The fair value of these financial items accounts for 55.85 billion yuan.
