U.S. is suspecting TSMC over chip dealings with Huawei. The authorities have reportedly begun investigating the Taiwanese semiconductor firm to determine if it has supplied any smartphone or AI chipsets to the Chinese tech giant.

The U.S. is looking for every loophole that can help Huawei in the advanced chipmaking process. A recent report said that the Biden administration may soon add more Chinese firms to the Entity list, blocking the growth of the chip network in China.

Apart from keeping an eye on China, the U.S. is now investigating other foreign suppliers who can lend a hand to Huawei in semiconductor manufacturing.

Inputs reveal that the U.S. Commerce Department started probing TSMC for chip dealings with Huawei. The investigation is in the early stages and aims to check if the chipmaker has been making any AI or phone chips for Huawei for the time being.

If TSMC is found breaching the U.S. export regulations, it might face huge penalties or even a prohibition on using advanced chipmaking tools or techs temporarily.

Under this investigation, the U.S. authorities have targeted the Mate 60 series’ Kirin 5G 9000s chip and recently developed AI Ascend processor. Both these chipsets significantly contribute to China’s progress in the semiconductor industry.

The Commerce Department inquired TSMC about having any direct or indirect (via different names) chip shipments to Huawei in the past or at present. Investigators are also looking into other related aspects like “know-your-customer checks”.

Issues for TSMC

Further details note that the investigation could trouble TSMC to some extent. The Taiwanese chipmaker is one of the key chipset suppliers for U.S. firms.

For instance, Apple and Nvidia mainly rely on TSMC for their processors. Also, the Biden administration was planning a $6.6 billion subsidy for the chipmaker to develop its third fabrication unit in Arizona. However, an investigation could halt benefits for some time.

TSMC responded to this investigation and said that it follows all the U.S. export regulations without fail. Although if there is a problem, then it will take action to guarantee compliance in all possible aspects.

“TSMC is a law-abiding company and we are committed to complying with all applicable regulations. If we have any reason to believe there are issues, we will take prompt action to ensure compliance.”

HuaweiCentral’s Take

The U.S. will try every effort to push back Huawei as done in 2019. But this time, the Chinese OEM is focusing on being self-reliant. A recent report claimed that Huawei Kirin 7nm chip performance can match the level of the 5nm processor of TSMC.

How far the U.S. will stretch this investigation on TSMC chip dealings with Huawei would be worth looking forward to.

Huawei has interestingly hinted at the starting price of the Nova 13 series. As per the revelations, the new smartphones could cost below 3000 yuan. It seems there won’t be much difference between the latest and previous-gen devices in cost.

The Chinese tech giant has shared a new poster on the Huawei Mall for the Nova 13 series. The image highlights the standard and Pro models with a price question:

“Price: ¥2??9/¥3??9 | Pre-order to win a gift | Post your order and stand a chance to win starry handbags”

Note that the 2xx9 yuan price is for standard whereas the 3xx9 yuan is for the Pro variant. It indicates that the Huawei Nova 13 series starting price will be below 3000 yuan. It’s a relief to those who thought the cost may exceed 3000 yuan this time.

Last year, Huawei launched three models in the Nova 12 series: Standard, Pro, and Ultra. A Lite version also accompanied the lineup. These devices start pricing at:

  • Nova 12 Lite (256GB) – 2499 yuan
  • Nova 12 (256GB) – 2999 yuan
  • Nova 12 Pro (256GB) – 3999 yuan
  • Nova 12 Ultra (512GB) – 4699 yuan

Judging from the new posters and price of the Nova 12/12 Pro, it seems the Nova 13 series may bear the same cost tag as its predecessors. To know the exact details, we have to wait till the official unveiling of both smartphones.

Honor devices to equip Kirin chips in the future is still a big question and CEO Zhao Ming has finally responded on this matter. The executive said that the company doesn’t have any such plans for now and is focusing on other significant matters.

Zhao Ming took part in a recent livestream interview. He talked about many subjects like AI, large models, business sectors, the Magic 7 series, new features, and more.

During the interrogation, several netizens asked the CEO if Honor would use Kirin chips for its devices anytime. In response, Zhao Ming said that he’s pretty much aware that users hope for such an opportunity. They are eagerly waiting to see the Kirin chip powering Honor smartphones with a new performance boost.

Although it’s unlikely to happen in the short term. Honor has good cooperation with Qualcomm and prefers Snapdragon processors for its flagship models.

The 360 Group Chairman – Zhou Hongyi questioned if Honor isn’t considering Kirin chips due to its low production capacity and limited supply. Zhao answered that he had no idea about the production volume or any other matter related to it.

It’s not the first time that Honor denied using Kirin chips for its devices. The company’s CMO Jiang Hairong also refuted such rumors saying it’s complete nonsense.

Honor does have the values and core characteristics of Huawei. Although it believes that it can no longer become Huawei and would like to remain a separate company. Zhao also clarified in previous interviews that Honor can defeat its all rivals even if it begins things from scratch.

The CEO stated that the new-gen Honor Magic 7 series will run on Snapdragon 8 Gen 4. We can expect dynamic performance boost with the Magic 7 series.

Huawei is developing a new Kirin 9 series chip for its devices, which could adopt a “1+3+4” octa-core architecture. It will likely be built on a 7nm process. This time, the company has improved its chipset manufacturing for better CPU performance.

FixedFocus notes that the upcoming Huawei Kirin 9 series chip may have a “1+3+4” CPU architecture. It will use one self-developed large core, three medium cores, and 4 small cores. It could also use an improved 7nm Pro Plus chipset platform.

A self-developed large core implies better and higher performance. These cores can easily handle heavy tasks like gaming, video editing, and more. The medium and small cores maintain balance and ensure a reduction in power consumption.

7nm Pro Plus hints at a more enhanced chipset platform. Huawei has said to improve its existing 7nm technology rather than focusing on the new 5nm or 3nm ones. The 7nm Pro Plus refers to the company’s new improvements in chip making.

The leak also implies that the OEM may use 8, 6, and 4 channels as per the chipset yield. Here, channels refer to a separate path that enables the CPU to access memory. The number of channels in a processor helps it to interact with memory modules.

For instance, the Quad Channel has four channels to associate with the memory module. The “6-channel and 8-channel” mainly used for servers. A high number of channels also increases bandwidth and results in dynamic computing performance.

Some netizens predicted that Huawei may bring two new Kirin chips for its Mate 70 series. The standard Mate 70 model could use the new Kirin 9 chip. Meanwhile, the high-end variants will likely adopt a 5nm processor with upgraded performance.

The prediction might be accurate to some extent. Huawei has been long-rumored to develop new Kirin chipsets for its flagship products. It seems the processors are in the final development phase and could show up by the end of this year.

Other details about the new chipset such as its name, official parameters, and internal changes are still unknown. Although we will discover these inputs probably with the Mate 70 series launch, seemingly scheduled for November 2024.

A new screen protector leak hints at the nearing launch of Huawei Mate X6 foldable. The latest information reveals that the dual-folding phone’s accessories are ready. Probably, it may enter the consumer world officially by next month.

DigitalChatStation shared the Huawei Mate X6 screen protector image. He adds that the peripheral materials (here, accessories) of the new foldable are ready.

By looking at the image, we can see that the Huawei Mate X6 will have a rounded-corners display. The screen part mostly appears flat but slightly curved due to the plastic wrapping. Speaking of the bezels around the screen, it appears quite narrow.

An early leak suggested the Huawei Mate X6 will use a super flat display for effective visuals. The device could also use the UTG (Ultra Thin Glass) panel to offer a comfortable feel on the hands. The latest leak confirms this point to some extent.

Mate X6 accessories hints that Huawei is all set to unveil the new foldable next month. The device may launch alongside or a few days later from the Mate 70 series unveiling. The company hasn’t confirmed the release date yet for this folding phone.

After the Mate 70 series, Mate X6 could be the next to adopt HarmonyOS NEXT. The new software system is running in the public beta phase for selected devices and will go stable with the flagship Mate 70 smartphone launch.

Coming back, the Mate X6 may also introduce a new Kirin 5G chip, AI capabilities, and some upgraded satellite features. It might use the same circular camera design as the predecessor but with better imaging capabilities.

Other parameters of the device are unknown but we will keep you posted with the latest details, leaks, and revelations on this matter.

Huawei continues to create problems for Apple in the Chinese smartphone sales sector. A research organization says that after 46 months of struggle and challenges, Huawei smartphone sales in China have surpassed the iPhone maker this year.

CINNO Research has released a new report entitled “After 46 months, Huawei Chinese smartphone sales exceeded Apple again in August 2024.” The report reveals the current status of the smartphone market in China and the top rankers.

The report highlights the overview of the smartphone market based on the monthly development trend in September 2024. It covers the sales volume, brand analysis, and the top smartphone brand that has been on the top in the last few months.

Inputs reveal that Huawei has given a tough fight to the Apple iPhone sales in China after 46 months. The company’s market share in the Chinese high-end smartphones (above 6000 yuan) has been gradually increasing due to new creations.

Huawei’s sharp rise in market share is ultimately putting more pressure on Apple. The US tech giant is already declining in the Chinese phone market. Meanwhile, heavy competition from Chinese rivals is pushing Apple further back in the ranking.

Mate 60 series launched last year, resulted in immense popularity – thanks to the Kirin 5G chip and the satellite calling feature. The previous-gen models led to booming sales which once again increased the brand’s value in the Chinese smartphone business.

After four years of hustles, Huawei topped the Chinese smartphone market in Q1 2024 with a sales increase of 110% YoY. The report further states that the company won the tag of No.1 in H1 2024 Chinese smartphone sales with a market share of 17.5%.

Huawei has also launched new phones like Pocket 2, Pura 70 series, and Nova Flip which increased the company’s sales revenue this year. Also, the Mate 70 series is in the pipeline and expected to add a new hike in the brand’s sales section.

Huawei Mate 70 series will bring notable upgrades for users and one of the key changes could be faster touch response. The company may adopt a new component for Mate 70 display panels that will boost the touch experience for its consumers.

Weibo tipster @FixedFocus implies that the Huawei Mate 70 series may use a new IC (Integrated Circuit) chip to enhance the touch response. The chip details are unknown. But it aims to provide a quicker and more responsive touch experience.

IC chip or integrated circuit is a microprocessor in the device that converts input signals into measurable waves. It helps determine the touch position on the screen.

Simply put, as soon as a finger comes in contact with the screen, the chip processes the signals via software algorithms and responds instantly and more efficiently.

The latest input states that Huawei will improve the touch feedback with Mate 70 models to a greater extent. The new touch IC chip in the next Mate lineup may provide a faster and more productive touch response, especially while playing games.

Apart from the new touch IC chip, Huawei may also adopt an upgraded side-mounted fingerprint sensor for the Mate 70 vanilla and Pro variants. It is expected to occupy less space on the side edges and ease the overall unlocking experience.

Huawei aims to deliver the best device experience with the Mate 70 series. The previous-generation models have been a huge milestone for the company. Now it aims the same sales record and attention for the upcoming Mate lineup.

Expected Upgrades

Mate 70 series has entered mass production and will likely launch in the next month. It will be the first to feature stable HarmonyOS NEXT and may bring a brand-new Kirin chipset (probably with a 5nm process).

Some other changes in the list include a stronger body architecture using basalt material, a circular camera bump with new imaging capabilities, AI features, as well as a slightly upgraded design, and more.

A Weibo tipster suggests that Huawei may share the Nova 13 series teaser on October 8. Not only Huawei but many other phone makers could also begin pre-heating their high-end smartphones from this week, starting tomorrow.

Huawei is busy with the HarmonyOS NEXT public beta preparations. But it seems the company could announce one more product alongside the software offering.

Tipster @BadReviewEmperor says that the Huawei Nova 13 series and Honor X60 teaser will likely be out on October 8. Both devices are ready to debut this month and the respective brands could officially announce these handsets tomorrow.

Nova 13 series was expected to launch in June this year. Later, it was delayed till August and is now speculated to debut this month. The Chinese tech giant might finally showcase the new high-end models with impressive design and features.

A previous leak implied that the Nova 13 lineup could release on October 22. Thus, the latest information also adds consent to the nearing launch of Nova 13.

Huawei hasn’t confirmed the launch details for the Nova 13 models so far. But if the current leak is true, the company may announce or tease the new Nova handsets tomorrow alongside the HarmonyOS NEXT public beta program for eligible devices.

The Nova 13 series could bring an upgraded appearance over the Nova 12 handsets. It may feature new capabilities and enhanced satellite features with better connectivity. Perhaps, users will experience a more seamless satellite performance.

Earlier, a tipster said that Huawei Nova 13 series will run on the Kirin 9010 chipset and will be 5G capable. It would be a great piece of news as the Nova 12 series did not have 5G capability for all models. It remains confined to high-end variants.

Consumers may find the same dual-front camera setup as the previous-gen models. Although Huawei might enhance this segment with an upgraded XMAGE imaging system. Read More…
