Huawei today attended the 2024 World Intelligent Connected Vehicle event in Beijing. During the conference, the company’s senior executive delivered a keynote and responded to Huawei Intelligent Driving and Tesla FSD rivalry questions.

Yu Chengdong – the Chairman of Huawei Smart Automotive Solution said that the firm is reaching new heights in smart car solutions. It is becoming more advanced day by day and aims to provide its automakers with the best carmaking techs.

At the event, some attendees questioned how he sees Tesla FSD against the Huawei Intelligent Driving Unit. In response, Yu Chengdong said he’s quite confident about the company’s smart car solutions and expects a win in this game.

Tesla FSD (Full Self-Driving) will likely enter China in the first quarter of the next year. A regulatory approval is still pending on this matter which ultimately delayed the time from the end of this year to early 2025.

FSD is one of the most autonomous versions of Tesla’s Autopilot software. It is a collection of advanced driver assistance features that offers stable and energetic assisted driving. But it still needs active driver supervision to work effectively.

During the event, Yu mentioned that Huawei Intelligent Driving is slightly better than Tesla FSD. He stated that even the vehicles without a LiDAR will perform better than those with FSD. Meanwhile, the LiDAR variant will be a stronger opponent.

“They (Tesla) didn’t use LiDAR, but we did, which made up for the perception capability. We are slightly better than them in China.”

Yu adds that FSD performs well enough. But when we tested and compared both driving solutions in the US, Canada, and other countries, Huawei had led this game.

How Tesla and Huawei Intelligent Driving will compete with each other will be seen in 2025.

Huawei is reportedly picking expensive parts for its Mate 70 series which will ultimately raise the overall production cost. A leak says the upcoming Mate flagship manufacturing could be 30% higher than the newly launched Apple iPhone 16.

Weibo tipster @DirectorShiGuan stated that Huawei is using quite pricey components for its next flagship lineup. For instance, the display panel, camera module, primary lens, main processor, power efficiency SoCs, and other parts.

Together, these components for the Huawei Mate 70 series could increase the overall production cost. Adding more details, the tipster said that the Mate 70 models’ manufacturing would be 30% higher than the new Apple iPhone 16 handsets.

Early inputs mentioned that Huawei will use high-end elements for its new devices. The company has been reportedly testing upgraded display techs, new OmniVision camera sensors, enhanced 3D face recognition, and many other components.

Thus, it is possible to see a hike in the production cost of the Mate 70 series over its predecessors and other competitors. But it doesn’t mean a higher selling price!

Input reveals that despite a higher production cost, the Mate 70 series may not be costlier than the iPhone 16 variants. It could be the same as the previous-gen models to some extent. The exact price details will likely be revealed by next month.

Huawei Mate 70 series was expected to launch in September this year. That would have resulted in a grand showdown between the Apple iPhone 16 and the Mate 70 devices. Although the Chinese OEM surprised users with a tri-fold smartphone.

Mate 70 seemingly delayed due to hardware and software optimizations. A few details said that the company is working on the HarmonyOS NEXT adaptation for the new phones. Kirin chip production was another cause behind the delay.

The company’s Consumer Business Group Chairman – Yu Chengdong said that the Mate 70 series will debut in the fourth quarter of this year. In that manner, the device is seemingly on time and may show up with brand-new capabilities in the next month.

Huawei is expected to introduce HarmonyOS PC this year but a rumor claims it won’t be possible until Q3 2025. The Chinese tech giant might delay the launch of its first computer-dedicated software. However, this delay could also be for good.

DirectorShiGuan says that Huawei might launch HarmonyOS PC in Q3 2025 if nothing goes wrong. Users need to wait till next year to know more info about the software.

The tipster adds that Huawei will likely launch the Kirin PC chips at the same time. It’s unclear which GPU the company will use to complement its laptop processor. Although the company may use a self-developed graphics processing unit.

It seems Huawei is currently focusing on the smartphone section. Products like a 5nm Kirin chip and HarmonyOS NEXT are already in the works. The OEM  is expected to make these creations official in the upcoming months with the Mate 70 series.

Meanwhile, Huawei could dedicate the next year to PCs. The Chairman of the company’s consumer business unit – Yu Chengdong said that the next-gen notebooks will run on HarmonyOS rather than Windows, and that may happen by next year

A recent leak stated that HarmonyOS PC may take at least six months more in development. No doubt, the company wants to offer the best experience with the HarmonyOS PC. This requires both effort and time. Hence the delay seems for good.

HarmonyOS PC UI design already appeared on the official Huawei Developer site, implying that it’s ready for launch. There might be some internal changes left that the company would complete in the forthcoming months.

The company hasn’t mentioned any details on the HarmonyOS PC yet. So let’s take the current input with a grain of salt and wait for the official announcement.

HarmonyOS PC: Changes

HarmonyOS PC is expected to support significant GPU upgrades to provide better rendering and quick operations. Just like the phone version, the PC software will also eliminate the Android codes and will follow the native HarmonyOS app ecosystem.

Regarding the UI, the software is said to have a more clean and simple look than iOS. You can check the overall design of the HarmonyOS PC HERE.

UncleKanshan notes that Huawei has a new notebook in the pipeline called ‘Hi MateBook’. The device will likely launch later this month as a smart laptop.

Further details note that the new Huawei MateBook could debut with HarmonyOS PC. The input could be accurate to some extent as the company’s senior executive – Yu Chengdong said that the next-gen PCs will run on HarmonyOS instead of Windows.

Earlier, the same tipster reported that Huawei is working on a mysterious X project. The project is linked with Smart Selection PCs and may launch by October end. He added that the tech giant may unveil a HarmonyOS notebook in the next six months.

If the X project here is the Hi MateBook, there is a slight possibility that it will launch with HarmonyOS PC. Though an official confirmation still awaits.

Yu Chengdong, Executive Director, Chairman of Consumer BG, and Chairman of Smart Automotive Solutions BU said that Huawei will top the Chinese flagship car market with its self-driving technologies.

Huawei uses HarmonyOS smart automotive software solution to provide self-driving technologies for car companies across the Chinese automotive industry.

Yu Chengdong said that HarmonyOS for smart cars could become the number one solution in the high-end car market in the next five years. The company has already integrated its solutions in the sub 500,000 yuan range and now it’s going for 1 million yuan and above market.

The automotive chief said Huawei makes cars with several brands including Aito, BAIC, and others. He pointed out that the company has already become successful in the high-end market citing the Wenjie M9 vehicle with robust sales.

“Although the four-world cars are made by different car manufacturers, Huawei is in control of the experience and underlying technology,” said Chengdong.

ADS 3.0

Earlier this year, Huawei introduced Automated Driving System (ADS) 3.0 for smart cars. The solution uses LiDAR + Camera solutions. On the other hand, rivals such as Tesla are considering using camera solutions and have eliminated LiDAR a few years ago.

Yu Chengdong said camera solutions without LiDAR will leave the camera blinded. He said cameras have limits and it could become hard for the car to maintain its senses in unfavorable weather.

The system brings smart features such as enhanced parking features. It has also added AI safety checks to keep the car functioning in most scenarios. To conclude, the automotive chief said that ADS 3.0 is not L3 yet but is designed based on L3 standards.

Huawei Consumer Business Group Chairman – Yu Chengdong recently said that no one is allowed to leak unreleased devices, or else it will result in a fine. The executive stated this in the context of being photographed with the Mate XT in a plane.

Yu Chengdong attended a short interview a few days back. The executive talked about some topics including Mate XT innovation, hardware, and HarmonyOS software.

During the interrogation, the host talked about how the executive got snapped with the Mate XT tri-fold twice. On this matter, Yu Chengdong responded that leaking unreleased Huawei devices has strict punishments and will result in a fine.

The Chairman further said that Huawei doesn’t allow its executives or other officials to leak secrets of unreleased Huawei devices like design, images, or any other details.

Although if someone opts for it, they are subject to fines. The company has the right to information security and can take steps on such activities whenever it wants to.

Yu recalled the scenario and mentioned that while traveling he unfolded and used the Mate XT as a tablet to cover its appearance. But people with sharp eyes noticed the design of the device. They might thought of how a tablet could be so thin and considered it as tri-fold.

“We have information security, and leaks will be fined. Because I thought it would appear like a tablet to everyone. But people with sharp eyes might doubt it. ” – says Yu Chengdong.

The host asked that it wasn’t hard for anyone not to discover the tri-fold, in any occasion. Yu responded that he had been using the Mate XT as a tablet for several months before launch. The trick was to use it as a tablet so people may not know.

“I often used the phone on the plane so I didn’t expect that it would be discovered by sharp-eyed people once or twice. I had been using it for several months before it launched in the consumer market.”

Huawei’s Yu Chengdong have been captured twice with the Mate XT triple-foldable before its launch. The first time users saw the chairman in the plane using the device in an unfolded state. The second time he was captured with the phone in a single-screen state, showing off the giant camera.

However, the company ensures to keep its unreleased devices completely a secret until a week before the launch, or the launch day. It tried to maintain this strategy with Mate XT as well. Although the phone leaked out due to the “sharp eyes of netizens”.

Mate XT tri-fold is available on sale. The device is currently available for pre-registered users. Although Huawei may soon open a wider sale activity for everyone including the walk-in customers. You can read more about the Mate XT device HERE.

Huawei users are eagerly waiting for the HarmonyOS NEXT stable version and this wait could end by mid-October. A new leak now gives a more clear timeline for the official release of the self-developed software system.

Early news said that Chen Xinxin – a Huawei official confirmed the release of HarmonyOS NEXT by the end of this month. But later, a tipster refuted this input saying that consumers have to wait till October to experience the new software.

Now @FixedFocus has said that HarmonyOS NEXT stable version could launch by mid-October. The tipster mentioned that HarmonyOS NEXT will battle with Snapdragon 8 Gen 4. Judging from this statement, it seems the software may launch before Qualcomm’s next-gen flagship chipset.

Qualcomm is expected to unveil its new chip around October 21st. Perhaps, HarmonyOS NEXT may go official before this date. A few netizens said that Huawei might release the stable version right after the Spring Festival (from October 1 to 7).

Thus, we have an expected timeline for HarmonyOS NEXT stable launch: October 8 to 20. However, only Huawei can confirm the accuracy of these revelations.

If we look back, Huawei began rolling out the HarmonyOS 4 stable version in August 2023. But this time, the story is different as HarmonyOS NEXT is a real and self-developed operating system. It is free of traditional Android components like Linux.

The software is also faster, smoother, and safer than its previous versions. At the same time, the company is trying to adapt native HarmonyOS apps for a more convenient and reliable user experience.

Yu Chengdong confirmed that HarmonyOS NEXT stable version will meet consumers in Spring. Hence, the software development and current leaks seem on the right track. Things will get more clear in the coming days. Till then, you can have a look at HarmonyOS NEXT capabilities below.

Huawei is seemingly ready to ditch Windows for its next-gen PCs in favor of the HarmonyOS software system. One of the company’s executives has confirmed that current laptops could be the last batch running on an external operating system.

Yu Chengdong, the Huawei Consumer Business Chairman attended a live broadcast on September 20. During the interview, he said the next-generation Huawei PCs will launch with pre-installed HarmonyOS software instead of Windows.

The Chairman says Huawei has to drop Windows support following the U.S. ban. The company was blacklisted in the U.S. in 2019 and since then, it has continued to suffer for advanced techs, chipmaking tools, and even enhanced software.

Now the company aims to become self-dependent by introducing a new OS free of foreign components. This is why the current Matebook products could be the last batch running on Windows and Huawei may soon introduce HarmonyOS PC.

Yu mentions that Huawei began reducing its dependency on foreign parts long ago. Thus, the upcoming hardware and software products will be more efficient.

The executive adds that the company has used several American elements so far. But after the sanctions, the company greatly reduced the usage, and now processing to completely replace them. The results will be visible in the future.

During the interrogation, a few netizens said that Western x86 (Windows version) has always been unreliable. Although they hope that HarmonyOS PC could be efficient in coding and editing. “Mr. Yu should bring the new HarmonyOS PC to the market soon.”

HarmonyOS has been used as a significant OS for various devices. But the company never installed it on its PCs due to its access to Windows. Yet, in the past few years, the company readied a backup plan for its notebooks to battle against growing sanctions.

Whether Huawei will launch HarmonyOS PC for only the home ground or bring it to global consumers (just like tablets and watches) is still unclear. Things might get clear with the official launch of HarmonyOS PC in the time ahead.

Huawei officially announced the launch of HarmonyOS NEXT by the end of this month however, a tipster says otherwise. A new input reveals that the company could still delay the HarmonyOS NEXT official version release till next month.

Tipster @DirectorShiGuan said that there won’t be any HarmonyOS NEXT launch at the end of this month. The previous information has been revised again and Huawei smartphone users should keep patience till next month (October 2024).

Isn’t it a bit strange? One of the Huawei officials – Chen Xinxin said that the HarmonyOS NEXT launch will happen by the end of this month. This news was reported by local media covering the China International Fair Trade-In Service event.

But let’s recall Huawei’s official words during the HDC 2024 event for HarmonyOS NEXT. Yu Chengdong, the Chairman of the company’s Consumer Business Group said that HarmonyOS NEXT official version will meet users in Q4 2024.

Yu didn’t reveal the exact timeline. In that case, the tipster’s point seems accurate to some extent. Another point of view is, Huawei could introduce HarmonyOS NEXT stable version this month while initiate the rollout for flagship models next month.

The Chinese tech giant is likely to host a launch event in China on September 24. If the previous report is true, the company will surely share HarmonyOS NEXT details during the event. Or else, we have to hold our patience till the next month.

Huawei vs Honor – next month?

The tipster further states that two tech giants probably Huawei and Honor, will rival each other next month for their flagship models and a new OS. He adds that this would be the first time that both firms will have a head-on moment after their separation.

The flagship models here might refer to the Mate 70 and Magic 7 series. But previous revelations say that both lineups could launch in November this year. Let’s see how far the current information will appear to be true in the time ahead.
