Huawei today attended the 2024 World Intelligent Connected Vehicle event in Beijing. During the conference, the company’s senior executive delivered a keynote and responded to Huawei Intelligent Driving and Tesla FSD rivalry questions.

Yu Chengdong – the Chairman of Huawei Smart Automotive Solution said that the firm is reaching new heights in smart car solutions. It is becoming more advanced day by day and aims to provide its automakers with the best carmaking techs.

At the event, some attendees questioned how he sees Tesla FSD against the Huawei Intelligent Driving Unit. In response, Yu Chengdong said he’s quite confident about the company’s smart car solutions and expects a win in this game.

Tesla FSD (Full Self-Driving) will likely enter China in the first quarter of the next year. A regulatory approval is still pending on this matter which ultimately delayed the time from the end of this year to early 2025.

FSD is one of the most autonomous versions of Tesla’s Autopilot software. It is a collection of advanced driver assistance features that offers stable and energetic assisted driving. But it still needs active driver supervision to work effectively.

During the event, Yu mentioned that Huawei Intelligent Driving is slightly better than Tesla FSD. He stated that even the vehicles without a LiDAR will perform better than those with FSD. Meanwhile, the LiDAR variant will be a stronger opponent.

“They (Tesla) didn’t use LiDAR, but we did, which made up for the perception capability. We are slightly better than them in China.”

Yu adds that FSD performs well enough. But when we tested and compared both driving solutions in the US, Canada, and other countries, Huawei had led this game.

How Tesla and Huawei Intelligent Driving will compete with each other will be seen in 2025.

On May 31, Huawei hosted a launch event unveiling some amazing smart cars with its partners. During the conference, Huawei Consumer Business Group Chairman Yu Chengdong said that the company’s intelligent driving unit is confident to beat its rivals.

The executive said this, in response to Tesla FSD’s (Full Self-Driving) plan to enter China. Elon Musk is looking to roll out this software treatment on the Chinese ground for Tesla users, providing a better, more efficient, and easier driving experience.

U.S. EV maker already has two autopilot driver assistance systems in the Chinese market, but these are less efficient. However, the firm now aims to bring the FSD software solution by completing registration with MIIT and initiating the testing.

Managing Director at Shanghai Consultancy Automotive Foresight – Yale Zhang said that Tesla’s FSD release in China would pressure other EV startups to accelerate their research and development. But Huawei has something else to say about this.

Yu Chengdong quotes that the Huawei Intelligent Driving unit is confident and capable of defeating its rivals, even after Tesla FSD software makes its way to China.

The chairman mentions that the company has tested its solution in many countries including the U.S. And the overall results are good enough to compete with other contestants in the automobile market. Speaking of the Tesla FSD, Yu cited last year:

“Tesla FSD does a great job. The solution does not rely on high-precision maps. But still, our solution is better and safer!”

It is a bold statement in favor of Huawei’s Intelligent Driving Business. No doubt, the tech maker might have amazing plans and schemes like the Qiankun solutions that will give a tough fight to others in the market.

Huawei Smart Car Business Group Leader, Yu Chengdong has recently said that Huawei has the best smart car technology and we’ve already surpassed US EV maker Tesla FSD in competition.

Yu said that Huawei currently has the best solution in the field of smart driving, and the company has surpassed Tesla FSD and all Chinese and foreign companies in autonomous driving solutions.

He explained that smart driving involves many aspects and Huawei has made huge investments in its AI and machine learning technologies to check all of the high-quality standards. You should know that 70% of Huawei’s investment is made in the car field and 80% of that is used for smart driving.

“I believe that this value is also very high, which can greatly improve driving safety and reduce driving fatigue.” said Yu.

Since the launch of HarmonyOS in 2019, Huawei is focusing more on its own driving cockpit system and autonomous driving technologies. It has recently released automated driving system (ADS) 2.0, which comes with the latest features.

On the other hand, Tesla’s FSD Beta enables Tesla vehicles to drive autonomously through most driving scenarios – including traffic lights – but under heavy supervision from the driver at all times. It requires frequent driver interventions on top of supervision and, therefore, it is still considered a level 2 driver-assist system.

Surpass All:

Yu Chengdong concludes that Huawei will cooperate with car companies to create the best smart connected electric vehicles. In terms of smart driving, we first achieved the number one experience in the smart cockpit. The difficulty of smart driving is much higher than that of the smart cockpit.

“When people are driving, the intelligent driving AI robot behind it is assisting them. In case you make a mistake, traffic accidents can be avoided. Or, when people are tired and tired, letting the car drive by itself can greatly reduce driving fatigue.” added Mr. Yu.

During the 20th Shanghai Auto Show, Huawei lauds its smart driving system and said it’s way better than what Tesla is using. The Chinese tech maker also referenced using wide technologies to empower smart cars.

Li Wenguang, President of Huawei’s Intelligent Driving Domain sat in an interview on the sideline of the event. He revealed various details on Huawei’s ongoing projects and developments for the autonomous driving industry.

The president of Huawei’s smart car driving system said that Huawei has a high ceiling and better user experience as compared to Tesla.

He also shared observance on Tesla’s current autonomous driving system called, FSD. Full Self-Driving or FSD beta is a driving assistance software offered by Tesla. It uses car sensors and hardware to conduct various AI-powered tasks to drive users through roads but it’s currently incomplete.

Mr. Li said the Huawei team has seen Tesla FSD experience videos from North America. These videos and the driving technologies are easier. In complex road situations, Huawei’s smart driving system is significantly better than Telsa’s FSD.

Wanguang believes that autonomous driving provides services and user experience. These are the key features that help users to decide and pay accordingly. However, the entire concept of autonomous driving has only two priorities: Safety and Time. As long as car manufacturers are keeping these two priorities, there will be market space for all of the players.

Future of smart driving:

Li Wenguang mentioned that autonomous driving is still in the L2+ stage, and it will develop into L3, L4, and even unmanned driving in the future. He further explained that high-speed scenarios will be the first to adapt to L3-level commercial use, and scenarios such as parks and basements are more suitable for unmanned driving.

For urban scenarios, it is necessary to be safe and open on fixed lines. Moreover, the parking action is relatively simple. This year, Huawei is planning to do better in mastering car parking.

Lastly, Li Wenguang answered that L3 autonomous driving still involves the formulation of many standards and regulations, but technical capabilities must be prepared first. The application is also a matter of the past two years.
