Huawei today attended the 2024 World Intelligent Connected Vehicle event in Beijing. During the conference, the company’s senior executive delivered a keynote and responded to Huawei Intelligent Driving and Tesla FSD rivalry questions.

Yu Chengdong – the Chairman of Huawei Smart Automotive Solution said that the firm is reaching new heights in smart car solutions. It is becoming more advanced day by day and aims to provide its automakers with the best carmaking techs.

At the event, some attendees questioned how he sees Tesla FSD against the Huawei Intelligent Driving Unit. In response, Yu Chengdong said he’s quite confident about the company’s smart car solutions and expects a win in this game.

Tesla FSD (Full Self-Driving) will likely enter China in the first quarter of the next year. A regulatory approval is still pending on this matter which ultimately delayed the time from the end of this year to early 2025.

FSD is one of the most autonomous versions of Tesla’s Autopilot software. It is a collection of advanced driver assistance features that offers stable and energetic assisted driving. But it still needs active driver supervision to work effectively.

During the event, Yu mentioned that Huawei Intelligent Driving is slightly better than Tesla FSD. He stated that even the vehicles without a LiDAR will perform better than those with FSD. Meanwhile, the LiDAR variant will be a stronger opponent.

“They (Tesla) didn’t use LiDAR, but we did, which made up for the perception capability. We are slightly better than them in China.”

Yu adds that FSD performs well enough. But when we tested and compared both driving solutions in the US, Canada, and other countries, Huawei had led this game.

How Tesla and Huawei Intelligent Driving will compete with each other will be seen in 2025.

Huawei Consumer Business Group Chairman – Yu Chengdong recently said that no one is allowed to leak unreleased devices, or else it will result in a fine. The executive stated this in the context of being photographed with the Mate XT in a plane.

Yu Chengdong attended a short interview a few days back. The executive talked about some topics including Mate XT innovation, hardware, and HarmonyOS software.

During the interrogation, the host talked about how the executive got snapped with the Mate XT tri-fold twice. On this matter, Yu Chengdong responded that leaking unreleased Huawei devices has strict punishments and will result in a fine.

The Chairman further said that Huawei doesn’t allow its executives or other officials to leak secrets of unreleased Huawei devices like design, images, or any other details.

Although if someone opts for it, they are subject to fines. The company has the right to information security and can take steps on such activities whenever it wants to.

Yu recalled the scenario and mentioned that while traveling he unfolded and used the Mate XT as a tablet to cover its appearance. But people with sharp eyes noticed the design of the device. They might thought of how a tablet could be so thin and considered it as tri-fold.

“We have information security, and leaks will be fined. Because I thought it would appear like a tablet to everyone. But people with sharp eyes might doubt it. ” – says Yu Chengdong.

The host asked that it wasn’t hard for anyone not to discover the tri-fold, in any occasion. Yu responded that he had been using the Mate XT as a tablet for several months before launch. The trick was to use it as a tablet so people may not know.

“I often used the phone on the plane so I didn’t expect that it would be discovered by sharp-eyed people once or twice. I had been using it for several months before it launched in the consumer market.”

Huawei’s Yu Chengdong have been captured twice with the Mate XT triple-foldable before its launch. The first time users saw the chairman in the plane using the device in an unfolded state. The second time he was captured with the phone in a single-screen state, showing off the giant camera.

However, the company ensures to keep its unreleased devices completely a secret until a week before the launch, or the launch day. It tried to maintain this strategy with Mate XT as well. Although the phone leaked out due to the “sharp eyes of netizens”.

Mate XT tri-fold is available on sale. The device is currently available for pre-registered users. Although Huawei may soon open a wider sale activity for everyone including the walk-in customers. You can read more about the Mate XT device HERE.

Huawei is seemingly ready to ditch Windows for its next-gen PCs in favor of the HarmonyOS software system. One of the company’s executives has confirmed that current laptops could be the last batch running on an external operating system.

Yu Chengdong, the Huawei Consumer Business Chairman attended a live broadcast on September 20. During the interview, he said the next-generation Huawei PCs will launch with pre-installed HarmonyOS software instead of Windows.

The Chairman says Huawei has to drop Windows support following the U.S. ban. The company was blacklisted in the U.S. in 2019 and since then, it has continued to suffer for advanced techs, chipmaking tools, and even enhanced software.

Now the company aims to become self-dependent by introducing a new OS free of foreign components. This is why the current Matebook products could be the last batch running on Windows and Huawei may soon introduce HarmonyOS PC.

Yu mentions that Huawei began reducing its dependency on foreign parts long ago. Thus, the upcoming hardware and software products will be more efficient.

The executive adds that the company has used several American elements so far. But after the sanctions, the company greatly reduced the usage, and now processing to completely replace them. The results will be visible in the future.

During the interrogation, a few netizens said that Western x86 (Windows version) has always been unreliable. Although they hope that HarmonyOS PC could be efficient in coding and editing. “Mr. Yu should bring the new HarmonyOS PC to the market soon.”

HarmonyOS has been used as a significant OS for various devices. But the company never installed it on its PCs due to its access to Windows. Yet, in the past few years, the company readied a backup plan for its notebooks to battle against growing sanctions.

Whether Huawei will launch HarmonyOS PC for only the home ground or bring it to global consumers (just like tablets and watches) is still unclear. Things might get clear with the official launch of HarmonyOS PC in the time ahead.

Huawei Consumer Business Group Chairman – Yu Chengdong has recently been spotted in an Honor phone store. Looking at the clicked images, the CMO of Honor – Jiang Harrison showed his gratitude towards its parent firm’s senior executive.

The scenario took place at the airport. Inputs reveal that Huawei Yu Chengdong had been on a business trip when he stepped into an Honor store at the airport.

Photographs further highlighted that the executive was seeing the newly launched foldable phones at the store. In a picture, Yu was seen holding the Magic V Flip and exploring its features. Note that Magic V Flip is Honor’s first clamshell product.

Responding to the scenario, the CMO of Honor Devices Company – Jiang Harrison reposted a Weibo post capturing Huawei’s Chairman and said “Thank you Mr. Yu for your concern.”

These images became a hot topic of discussion among netizens on the social media platform. Many users asked if Huawei is missing its subsidiary at some point.

“Yu Chengdong still can’t let go of Honor? Can’t forget the brotherhood.”

During an interview, the CEO of Honor Company – Zhao Ming said that both Huawei and Honor are reputed firms and will fairly compete against each other. At the same time, they will continue to praise good points of each others’ product.

Thus, it shouldn’t be a surprise to see Yu Chengdong at the Honor phone store. After all, there was a time when Honor belonged to Huawei and used to run on its Kirin chip, follow the software update system, and provide similar after-sales services.

Although to protect the subsidiary from the U.S. restrictions, Huawei sold it out. Thereafter, Honor became an independent firm and explored new ways to build its products. Things changed with the new Magic foldable, the Magic 5 and 6 series, and MagicOS.

Yu didn’t give much detail on this subject. But he officially confirmed the launch of the Huawei triple foldable device for September. Earlier to this input, the Chairman already flaunted the tri-fold at many spots, implying the phone’s near launch.

The images were quite blurry and didn’t reveal much specs of the handset. One can check the display and camera aspects of the triple-folding phone below.

Some previous leaks say that the tri-fold phone is codenamed Iceland. The device will debut in September, probably competing with the iPhone 16 series. It may further adopt HarmonyOS PC-level apps and bring powerful performance with a Kirin chip.

The triple-fold could use the “Mate” name in the prefix. In the live shots, the phone showcased a massive circular camera structure at the back panel with some lenses and an LED Flash. Although the key parameters and other specs of the device are still unknown and may remain a mystery till the launch date.

Huawei is also exploring ways to reduce the pricing of its new product. At a live stream, Yu Chengdong said that the company has been working on this invention for five years. Thus, we can expect dynamic changes and features for the world’s first triple foldable smartphone.

Yu Chengdong – Huawei Consumer Business Chairman once again showed off the tri-fold phone and this time, the focus is on the rear camera bump. After the display, let’s learn a few things about the optical framework of the upcoming triple-foldable.

A few netizens again spotted Yu Chengdong holding the Huawei tri-fold but this time, in a folded state. The overall design looks quite thin and slim compared to leaks.

It seems Huawei has significantly worked on the thickness of its upcoming foldable phone. It appears much thinner than expected. While a few leaks said that the device could be bulky and may disappoint users, the new shot of the phone says otherwise.

Looking into the picture, the device has three blade-thin display panels, overlapped on each other. Huawei has finally got the thickness of the new triple foldable under control, resulting in the slimmest and cleanest appearance around.

The next highlight is the rear camera bump of the Huawei tri-fold handset. It adopts the same classic circular design as found in Mate phones. The device resembles the Mate 50-like optical structure on the back side with a decorative rim, housing it.

Other details of the Huawei tri-folding phone are still under the hood. But, the constant revelations of the device imply that the company is ready to launch the new product next month. Though an official confirmation still awaits on this matter.

Huawei triple-foldable will likely sport an inward + outward folding design and dual-hinge mechanism. It will equip a new Kirin 9 series chip and various new capabilities. AI features could be another major addition to this innovative folding phone

Although two major concerns for now are cost and limited quantities. The previous leaks suggest that Huawei will launch this device as a limited edition in the market. It will further bear high-ranging costs, making it difficult for every user to buy it.

The tech giant is constantly looking for methods that can significantly reduce the tri-fold’s price. How far things will be favorable would be worth looking forward to.

Several images on the online platform reveal a brand-new foldable device in Yu Chengdong’s hands. The executive was scrolling swiftly through the screen on the airplane. Based on the displayed content, it seemed Yu was using the WeChat app.

The displayed content hints that the split-screen mode will work perfectly with the tri-fold phone. Also, the handset appears large when unfolded – just like a tablet. Hence, users might experience great efficiency while managing office operations on it.

Further details reveal a long-hidden void on the right edge. It could be a stylus-slot. If accurate, the triple-foldable will bring stylus support for more convenience while doing writing work, making notes, and editing documents or images.

The overall device’s design is quite different from any normal book-type foldable or tablet. Also, it has a single punch hole design at the upper far left side. Even though Huawei hasn’t commented on this news, the live image is likely of the tri-fold handset.

Weibo tipster @DigitalChatStation added more insights on this matter. He says that the new triple foldable leaked in live images is the same as the prototype he saw before. It has an inner + outer folding mechanism with a dual-hinge outlook.

He also states that the thickness issue is now in control and won’t be a major concern. The device will run on a powerful Kirin 9 series chip and will likely launch before the Mate 70 flagship. Other additions will be AI features and high-end capabilities.

The leaked Huawei tri-fold phone hints that the device is ready to land on the consumer platform. It has already gone through various tests and won’t take much time to show up on the launch stage.

On July 15, 2024, Huawei Consumer Business Group Chairman Yu Chengdong held a live stream with Dong Yuhui (Influencer). During his interview, he revealed how Huawei went through tough times due to U.S. ban but didn’t lose hope to recover its business.

The Chairman said that the company has dealt with incredibly difficult days. After Huawei was blacklisted by the U.S. government for being a “security risk”, it faced many challenges in both the native regions as well as the global smartphone market.

Regardless a global 5G leader, the company has been even banned from using 5G chips for its own handsets. The Huawei smartphone business slowed down following export trade restrictions on chipmaking tools and other advanced equipment.

Yu further said that there was a time when the company sold only 20 million units per year. It was so as Huawei didn’t have better techs or chip tools back in 2022.

“My team wasn’t able to start operations. As the global leader in 5G technology, we didn’t even have 5G phones ourselves. Our days were incredibly difficult” – says Yu Chengdong.

In 2019, the Chinese tech giant sold around 240 million units of smartphones globally. However, that same year, the U.S. imposed sanctions on the company, which led to a drop in its smartphone business. The ban’s impact on the company is still visible.

US trading concerns Chinese companies

Although Huawei Chairman expects its business to recover amid the U.S. ban. The company is constantly making efforts to rejuvenate its smartphone business in both China and global markets. In this case, Mate 60 Pro appears as a turning point.

Huawei introduced Mate 60 Pro with Kirin 5G chipset last year. Since then, the company didn’t stop new Kirin chips production. Pura 70 Ultra is another example that runs on Kirin 9010 chip and this trend will probably continue with Mate 70 flagship.

Yu Chengdong also said that Huawei phones and other products are contributing to China’s growth. Consumers purchasing these devices also play a role in lifting China’s electronics supply chain and reducing the country’s dependency on foreign goods.

Huawei could raise the smartphone shipment bar in China to 50 million units this year, as per analysts. To do so, the company is trying its best in every way. Whether it’s HarmonyOS software capabilities or the new R&D Center establishment in Shanghai.

It would be worth seeing how Huawei takes on new achievements amid U.S. restrictions and several trade challenges.

Yu Chengdong – Huawei Consumer Business Group Chairman believes that the self-developed Kirin chips are playing a vital role in China’s growth. This is why, most Huawei phones and devices began using Kirin chips and China-made components.

While wrapping up last night’s broadcast, Yu Chengdong talked about how consumers supported the company even at bad times. He added that other tech vendors may see Huawei as an ordinary firm, but it has significantly contributed to China’s growth with its Kirin chips.

Yu Chengdong says that using a Huawei product automatically adds to the country’s progress. This is so because the company mainly uses self-developed Kirin chips for its devices. These Kirin processors have saved the company from going into losses.

He further states that one can check a Huawei phone. Tearing it down will show that it mostly contains China-made components and Kirin chips, instead of foreign parts.

“If a customer uses Huawei products then he/she is also contributing to the rise of China’s electronic industry.” – says Yu Chengdong.

Huawei Kirin chips growth

A good example of this case is the Pura 70 series (especially the base model), which is said to have 33 Chinese parts, the highest number to date. Mate 60 Pro also reported to contain 18% more China-made parts compared to Mate 40 Pro.

Huawei’s Chairman mentioned that they are still behind in the field of semiconductor technology. But that doesn’t put it much back. The company has advanced software that supplements its devices and other products, improving their performance.

Yu also notes that new software versions enhance the experience of the device for users. Though the company is trying its best to become better in chip tech soon.

The executive added that Huawei is achieving new milestones in every field. After a lot of hustle and bustle, the company is making new steps that are not only leading to self-progress but also clearing obstacles for the native region’s growth in the world.

On July 15, Huawei Consumer Business Group Chairman – Yu Chengdong mentioned the company’s next-generation foldable product for the first time. Judging from his words, it seems the executive has hinted at the upcoming triple-folding smartphone.

Yu Chengdong and Dong Yuhui (host) had a small interview last night (July 15, 2024). During the special live broadcast, the Chairman talked about various topics like smartphones, R&D, the company’s growth, bad times, challenges, and more.

Amid these subjects, the Huawei Chairman also mentioned the firm’s upcoming foldable product. Though Yu didn’t reveal the device name, it seemed to be a tri-fold.

Yu said that Huawei has been thinking about its next-gen foldable for 5 years, but couldn’t do it before. Throughout these years, the company worked on the research and development of its advanced and innovative handset with better capabilities.

He further added that Huawei’s new foldable is something that everyone thinks of but cannot make. This particular statement clues that Yu has quietly hinted towards the world’s first triple-fold phone, which could launch in the coming months.

“A new folding screen product that other manufacturers can’t make, Huawei has been thinking about it for 5 years and finally developed it.” – said Yu Chengdong.

This would be the first time when Huawei has mentioned its new fold device. Yu states that after 5 years of research and development, “now it’s finally coming out!”

Perhaps Huawei’s tri-fold is on the verge of completing its development and might show up in the fourth quarter this year. Being a new form factor, the device will likely hold several high-end technologies as well as significant features for consumers.

Some previous inputs revealed that Huawei tri-fold could use a Z design format with a 10-inch screen. It might equip a brand-new Kirin 9 series processor with robust performance and significant efficiency. You can read more about the chip HERE.

The triple-folding phone may also use a combo of inward + outward folding mechanisms alongside a dual-hinge design. This will probably increase the durability of the folding screen and eliminate common problems that often ruin user experience.

This would be an improved mechanism with a flexible screen that can not only strengthen folding scenarios but also enhance the visuals for users. Learn more about this patent HERE.
