South Korea is planning strict measures to block its chipset secrets as well as business leaks worldwide. The government could soon impose “heavier than before” penalties on those who leak regional regulations and chip-related secrets to others.

According to Reuters, the finance minister of South Korea, Choi Sang-mok said that the country is readying strict measures and rules to block chipset and technology leaks in the global market. It is preparing a big-data system as a major safety.

The new “big data” system will lead to useful and stricter rules with tougher punishments for culprits. The penalties under this system are unknown but it will eventually ensure full security of the business secrets and chip tech in the country.

“We will prevent illegal leaks of advanced technologies to raise the global competitiveness of our companies and strengthen technology leadership.” – said Choi.

South Korean government is taking such strict measures following the previous leak cases in the country. Inputs reveal that over 97 attempts have been made in the past five years to leak business secrets and chipset details to other countries.

As noted by the National Intelligence Service, 40 of these leaks were regarding chip manufacturing and its relevant parts. The good news is that these leaks didn’t achieve success. Or else, it would have led to a loss of $16.85 billion to the country.

In September, a South Korean official blamed for stealing chipmaking details from Samsung.  Thus, a few strict measures on this matter are quite necessary.

Over the years, South Korea established around 12 national strategic tech firms that can support the country financially. These include rechargeable batteries, aerospace and artificial intelligence, semiconductors, and more.

These industries also aim to protect and respond actively to global competition and help resolve supply chain problems. It would be worth seeing what new penalties South Korea will take on the chipset and tech leak matter.

Samsung phone users have locked their eyes on the One UI 7.0 arrival and in the meantime, the leaks are constantly implying better changes with the new upgrade. One effective enhancement in One UI 7.0 could be an all-new camera interface.

The South Korean tech giant is not only focusing on making its UI segment incredible but also easier to navigate. Despite an attractive interface, users often get stuck with the usage and navigation part of the One UI software updates.

But it seems the company is fixing this problem with the One UI 7.0. This could also be a reason why Samsung is taking time to release its new One UI beta update for developers and users. So without any delays, let’s take a look at new changes.

One UI 7.0 Camera Interface

The company is ready to give a bold revamp to the camera segment with the One UI 7.0 upgrade. The recent One UI 7.0 early build leaks suggest that the tech maker will adopt a more simple and easy-to-use camera interface with the new OS.

Looking into the details, shooting models like Photos, Videos, Portraits, and other labels now appear at the bottom of the screen. It is the perfect spot to switch between camera modes and other shooting tools without spending much time.

One UI 7 camera interface

One UI 7.0 to bring simpler and easier camera interface

Camera controls are now far better than the previous builds. One UI 7.0 has a new single tab as the replacement for Night Shot mode. The exact function of this button at the bottom of the camera interface is unclear. Though we may get details soon.

Other controls like Settings, Flash, Timer, Aspect Ratio, and Motion Photo can be found in the lower middle of the screen. These simple but significant changes will offer a clutter-free camera interface to users.

These changes even seem effective for those who prefer using the device in the one-handed mode. Such users can also opt for certain options from the top right corner of the camera layout. These changes could differ in the stable version. Hence, let’s wait more on this segment till the official rollout.

Samsung will reveal One UI 7 software at its annual developer conference with new capabilities but can it compete against HarmonyOS NEXT and iOS 18?

Samsung is the largest Android partner and sells most devices in each quarter. Despite this dominance, the South Korean tech firm is a latecomer in the software experience.

It made some changes in One UI 6 including a new quick settings panel and new controls. These are much appreciated by One UI users but that doesn’t reflect any solution for a core issue.

The software feels more rigid and animations are still not fluid enough to fully utilize the device’s hardware performance. The user interface has improved over time yet Samsung could do even better.

One UI 7 will be based on Android 15, the latest Android software version. There are new camera optimizations, better navigation capabilities, satellite connectivity support, and more.

Aside from these, what do the competitors have to offer?

iOS 18

Apple has recently refreshed its iOS operating system for iPhones. It has drastically changed the software UI, improved personalization, and optimized animation effects throughout the system.

For example, the two new popular sections in this new OS are the control center and home screen. Apple is now allowing users to customize the control center and add custom controls.

This feature is already available in Android devices but Apple took it to the next level with new customizations. You can resize control buttons based on the space and group them. iOS 18 users can also manage different control screens based on their categories for an improved experience.

Another addition is the app icons with colors based on a tint selection right on the screen without even going to the settings. These capabilities are far more accessible compared to Samsung or Android.

Coming to the performance, the app and animations open slightly faster and animations are optimized to feel surrealistic, except for the 60Hz devices.

HarmonyOS NEXT

Coming to the new player, HarmonyOS NEXT is a new operating system based on HarmonyOS. Huawei has been polishing this Android-influenced OS for the past four years.

The software has now achieved a native app ecosystem in the Chinese market. It is redesigned for maximum fluidity and physics-based controls.

In comparison to One UI 6, HarmonyOS (not HarmonyOS NEXT) performs far better in smoothness and app interactions. HarmonyOS NEXT has even better interactions with the native experience.

One UI 7 will be better?

Even though Samsung may not achieve superiority over these two software, it should at least come to the same level as its competitors because it will eventually benefit its customers. We’ll see what the company unveils at SDC event.

A Chinese computer scientist – Sun Ninghui calls Huawei business model a monopolistic in the U.S. tech war. According to him, China can’t win this battle against foreign technologies by only relying on “anti-competitive” and closed solutions.

Sun Ninghui is one of the prominent computer scientists in China. He is also a researcher and director at the Institute of Computing Technology, Chinese Academy of Sciences. In one of his recent speeches, the person reportedly criticized Huawei.

He says that Huawei’s business development model seems quite closed and monopolistic. The company’s dominance in the industrial sector as well as the technological chain won’t help China stand against the U.S. in the technology race.

“From chip manufacturing to software to large AI models to computing power networks, it’s best for everyone else not to participate, and Huawei will take over everything. I think we are using this kind of Chinese-style closure and monopoly to fight Western-style monopoly and containment, which we certainly can’t win.”

Another industry computer expert shared the same point saying that the dominance of one tech firm in the region hinders a healthy innovation ecosystem.

The expert gave the example of Samsung’s dominance in South Korea that obstructed the country’s overall tech progress. Although that’s just one side of the coin!

A Chinese investor shed light on this matter saying that the problem isn’t as serious as Sun has pictured it to individuals. He says that China is currently focusing on collecting resources with the help of large companies. After attaining success on this matter, it won’t be a big deal to address monopoly issues in the region.

Perhaps the familiar Chinese scientist has criticized Huawei business models in the US tech war, due to some other reasons.

Criticism due to conflict?

Xiang Ligang – a tech analyst said that Sun has openly criticized Huawei due to a business conflict. He said that a few scientists working with Sun are upset due to successful firms like Huawei, as their products aren’t a part of the world’s top ranking anymore.

The analyst further noted that Sun has called Huawei monopolistic as it has no way of proving the strength of its supercomputers. They often call their rivals incapable or weak in practical and commercial value. Xiang also mentioned that Huawei is growing after facing challenges and being choked by others.

Following Huawei Mate XT, Samsung is now in the news to soon launch a rollable phone. The South Korean firm looks ready to challenge the world’s first triple-folding handset with an extraordinary rolling foldable phone in the time ahead.

TheElec reports that Samsung could introduce the world’s first rollable phone next year. It seems the company is slightly shifting its focus towards a rolling foldable amid the S25 series development. Yet the device won’t debut as early as H2 2025.

Samsung already showcased its rollable phone prototype “Rollable Flex” during the CES 2024 event. Perhaps the company is now planning to bring this creation into the real world with a giant screen, advanced specs, and top-of-the-line features.

Inputs further reveal that the Samsung rollable-style phone may equip a 12.4-inch display, bigger than the Huawei Mate XT. It may get fully rolled out form for a compact feel on hands. The next major addition seems an under-display selfie shooter.

The name of this innovation is unclear for now. Although it might launch in the place of Galaxy Z Fold 7 next year. What else Samsung will adopt for its rollable device is a currently secret. Yet the aim would surely be to challenge Huawei’s tri-fold.

Mate XT – the world’s first tri-fold!

Huawei has become an ultimate foldable maker after launching the first-ever triple-foldable. Despite three screens, the device is 12.8mm thick when folded, slightly less than Galaxy Z Fold 6 but appears equal in live image, Check HERE.

Note that Huawei has also been in rumors for over two years to introduce a rollable-display phone. Months-ago report suggested that the company may launch such a device this year. Though the space is occupied by Mate XT. But who knows, the company could also bring a rollable device next year.

After the Mate developer, tech makers like Honor, Samsung, and Xiaomi are planning to jump into the sea of innovation. The Magic V3 maker is said to bring a 10mm thick tri-fold, thinner than Mate XT. Samsung, on the other hand, will turn to “rollable”.

This says the upcoming foldable phone market is going to be interesting and may ignite more fierce competition. It would be worth seeing who grabs the crown of the second smartphone maker in the innovative foldable race.

Huawei Mate XT is the world’s first triple foldable phone – an innovation that Apple and Samsung are far away from. The device has amazed several people worldwide not only for its tri-folding mechanism but also its sleek body structure.

Over the past decade, Huawei made huge strides when it comes to creative products. Whether we look into wearables, regular phones, or foldable ones. And now the Mate XT is a prime addition that reflects what a truly innovative creation looks like.

While Apple and Samsung are struggling to lessen the thickness of their regular phones, Huawei has brought such a device that remains thin despite three folds!

Mate XT: Uniqueness at peak

The first-ever triple foldable phone looks similar to a regular device when folded. But as you unfold it, the magic begins! Users can get the feel of 3-in-1 devices with this innovation. When folded, it acts as a normal phone for consumers.

When unfolded to the second screen, it serves as a mini PC, and finally, the fully unfolded state lets you surf the foldable like a tablet. The 10.2-inch giant screen offers the best viewing experience – thanks to the 3K ultra-high resolution.

Huawei Mate XT Samsung innovation

Huawei Mate XT display

Another impressive segment is the Z form. Unlike the normal V-shape, the Mate XT has adopted a zig-zag folding pattern which is quite appealing. This has been possible due to the dual-hinge system which uses two new display solutions:

  • UTG large screen
  • Non-Newtonian fluid

The former is applied to the internal screen to avoid stress on the folding part. Whereas, the latter is for the external display. It remains between the display panels and makes the foldable phone resistant to drop and other risky situations.

Huawei Mate XT Samsung innovation

Huawei Mate XT dual-hinge system

Huawei has also surprised folding phone users by introducing the thinnest battery of the Mate XT. The device equips a single thin cell of 1.9mm worth 5600mAh capacity.

Well, that reminds us of the device’s thickness! Ironically, the Huawei tri-fold measures the same as the Galaxy Z Fold 6 regardless of the three folding screens. That’s not us, but a recent analysis by smartphone users on the Reddit platform.

Mate XT is 12.8mm thick whereas Samsung’s latest book-type foldable is 12.1mm in width. The South Korean tech giant is a winner in this spec war but loses when the device is compared in front of the naked eye. You can check the image below.

Octagonal camera ring and the plain leather texture with a rich red color on the back uplift the design standards to the next level. The waistline patterns on the golden hinge reflect that Huawei has crafted this device with cutting-edge processes.

Many other innovative products:

As mentioned, this is not the first time that Huawei has unveiled a new chapter of innovation for its rivals. Devices like Watch Buds and GT Cyber are still the one-and-only creations in the market and no competitor has dared to pursue them.

This is how Huawei Mate XT has unfolded a new chapter of innovation for tech giants like Samsung and Apple. While one of them is struggling with old design formats and thick edges, the other one is yet to enter the foldable market.

U.S. is seeking new ways that hold back Chinese companies from making advanced semiconductors. As per a new report, the U.S. now forces South Korea to restrict HBM chip export to Chinese firms like Huawei, or else it’ll become a threat later.

On September 10 (Tuesday), the Korea-US Economic Security Conference was held in Washington DC. During the summit, both sides discussed the economic welfare of their regions. At the same time, the U.S. shed light on the chip war with China.

Alan Estevez – the U.S. Under Secretary of Commerce for Industry and Security, pressurized South Korea to restrict HBM chip supply in China for tech firms like Huawei and others. It should only provide chips to the allies (supporting countries).

The executive stressed South Korean chip suppliers to cooperate with the U.S. trade controls in China. Doing so would be beneficial or else, could harm Korea’s interests.

Estevez further revealed the risks of advanced AI chip-making in China. He says powerful GPUs and HBMs will help Chinese firms to develop high-end chipsets. China will power up AI applications with these chips and use them for military purposes.

Alan believes that advanced chipmaking equipment as well as HBM chips should be available only to those nations that comply with the U.S. trade export controls.

However, it seems South Korea’s Trade Minister Cheong In-kyo didn’t like the idea much. He expects more discussions on this matter with the U.S. because:

“When two of the three HBM chipmaking companies are Korean, export curbs can have a big impact on us.” – said Cheong In-kyo after the event.

Huawei restrict HBM chip US

The minister adds that the U.S. has not made an official announcement on this subject yet. Perhaps we may soon reach a conclusion that can benefit both sides.

Huawei and Chinese chipmakers were seemingly aware of such situations. This is why they started stockpiling HBM chips from Samsung months ago. China reportedly requires HBM2 and HBM2E chips. Even though these are still behind the most advanced HBM3E chips, they are capable of delivering efficient performance.

China-U.S. chip war continues to take new turns. After Huawei unveiled the Kirin 9010 and MateBook X Pro with Intel Core Ultra 9, the U.S. authorities are keeping an eye on China’s every move towards advanced chip making. Let’s see how this matter proceeds in the time ahead.

Honor has outperformed Samsung in the Western Europe foldable ground for Q2 2024. The Chinese tech giant continues to expand its market shares in the global folding phone franchise with innovative creations and useful software features.

Counterpoint has published a new report on the Q2 2024 global foldable market and highlighted the regional growth. Among various regions, the folding phone shipment has increased in Western Europe, Asian markets, and LATAM.

Interestingly, these regions are showing a consistent lead of Chinese phone makers. Honor is no exception to this theory and outpaced Samsung in the Q2 2024 Western Europe foldable race. For the first time, Honor topped the South Korean company.

Samsung has been the king of the global foldable market with impressive Galaxy Z phones. However, the fierce competition has now engulfed global regions where consumers demand more innovative, useful, and advanced folding phones.

The report notes that Honor has been the biggest contributor in Western Europe and won the “region’s No. 1 brand” badge. After the booming sales of Magic V2 globally, Honor achieved a 455% YoY progress in Q2 2024 worldwide foldable shipment.

Magic V2

Honor Magic V2 performed well in the global markets. It landed on the consumer ground as an “ultra-slim” book-type foldable. Counterpoint says that the Magic V2 has been the most-sold horizontal folding handset in all the regions, except China.

Honor remained a tough competitor in every global foldable sphere except China, where Huawei is still in a leading position. The Mate foldable is now planning to jump with its tri-fold in the Chinese market, opening a new chapter of innovation.

After the Magic V2, Honor is ready to unveil the Magic V3 foldable – the slimmest book-type folding device worldwide. The company already mocked Samsung over the thin hinge problem uniquely and interestingly.

Other than Honor, Motorola has achieved the highest foldable market share in North and Latin America. It obtained a 458% YoY increase in the LATAM foldable phone market, following the strong sales of the Razr 40 series.

With such contributions, the global foldable phone market has grown by 48%YoY in Q2 2024. Regarding Samsung, the report expects to see the Android foldable king back on the throne in Q3 2024 with the Galaxy Z Fold 6 series.

Honor is mocking Samsung by imprinting a small apology letter on the Magic V3 hinge. The Chinese OEM is ready to introduce its new book-type foldable in the global market. Ahead of the launch, Honor described its new creation interestingly.

The trolling topic revolves around the thin hinge. With Magic V3, Honor claims to offer the thinnest hinge solution. The device is only 9.2mm thick when folded which is far more thinner than the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 6 (12.1 mm when folded).

If Magic V3 is so good, for what did Honor apologize to Samsung?

Well, the matter is all about poking the rival. Samsung is still struggling to manage a thin hinge mechanism for its flagship folding phones. Honor Magic V3, on the other hand, is ready to offer the slimmest and thinnest experience to users.

Roasting Samsung, Honor has engraved a 166-word apology letter on the Magic V3 hinge. The company collaborated with the UK micro-artist: Graham Short to poke the South Korean company and its Galaxy Z Fold 6 in a unique way.

Graham Short imprinted a small apology on the Magic V3 hinge. The letter is so small that one cannot read it easily. Hence, the X account holder Alvin has provided the text:

Honor Samsung apology hinge

Honor roasts Samsung with a small apology engraved on the Magic V3 hinge (Image Credits: Alvin/X)

“Dear Samsung Galaxy Z Fold owners, we’re sorry. We know you were excited to buy a phone that folds in half and fits in your pocket, awkwardly. You were promised the future, a technical marvel, a world of boundless multitasking and performance.

And now, you’re probably looking at the new HONOR Magic V3 and feeling a little… betrayed. Size matters, and we feel your pain. Like being tipped for a gold medal and then coming last in the race, the knowledge that a thinner, lighter, and more durable foldable exists is enough to make anyone question their choices.

We get it. You were an early adopter, a pioneer bravely venturing into the uncharted territory of foldable screens with questionable durability. You deserve better. In fact, you deserve a gold medal. In all seriousness, we at HONOR are committed to pushing the boundaries of technology and bringing you the best possible foldable experience. We’re just saying… it’s okay to feel let down. We’d feel the same way.”

Both Honor and Samsung are among the top folding phone vendors in the global market and such trolls intensify the competition further. However, it would be worth seeing if Samsung comes up with a new “thin” handset in the time ahead, to respond on this matter.

Following Huawei, Samsung and vivo appeared in the second and third positions respectively. The South Korean company is leading in the clamshell product. Galaxy Z Flip devices featuring AI capabilities are winning consumers’ attention.

Speaking of growth rate, Transsion has the highest score with 3150% YoY growth. Honor ranks second with 423% YoY, and Huawei is in the third spot.

Huawei Central’s Take:

The Mate developer dominates the Chinese foldable market. It’s time that the tech giant should also unveil a new folding device for global consumers. For instance, the Mate X5, the Pocket 2, the Nova Flip, or the upcoming Mate X6 folding handset.

Pocket 2 is already in the news to soon step into the global market. However, it would be worth seeing if the company launches the Mate X6 on the global surface or will keep it confined in the home ground, like the predecessor.
