Huawei is launching several products next week and one of these could be a VR headset. The company might unveil its long-rumored Virtual Reality device on October 22 to compete with the Apple Vision Pro in the Chinese consumer market.

VR or Virtual Reality headset is a head-mounted device. It offers immersive virtual experiences through a 3D near-eye display (lenses). The display uses key technologies like positional tracking to generate a virtual environment for the user.

A new input says that Huawei may launch its first high-end VR headset next week. The company has been in the news for its secretive VR device since February 2024. Many tipsters said the OEM has a dynamic headset in the pipeline.

Now it seems we don’t have to wait much to see the amazing Virtual Reality headset. Huawei hasn’t announced any details or teased the device so far. Thus, let’s hold patience till October 22 launch event for an official confirmation on this matter.

Some early leaks have claimed that Huawei’s VR device would be far better, lighter, and more cost-effective than Apple Vision Pro. According to the former executive of Meizu Li Nan, the Huawei VR headset will equip a Sony 4K micro-OLED screen.

This display panel might have the same capabilities as the Apple Vision Pro. Also, the device could use Huawei’s self-developed chipset and weigh 350 grams.

Next, the Huawei VR headset could feature a gesture-based control system with no time delay. While Apple Vision Pro (600 grams) costs 25000 yuan, the Huawei VR product may have a price value of 15000 yuan.

Overall, Huawei’s Virtual Reality headset will bear stronger features and capabilities than Apple Vision Pro. It may excel in comfort and run all day long.

Other features and details of the expected device are unknown. But we may find them by October 22. Stay Tuned.

U.S. is suspecting TSMC over chip dealings with Huawei. The authorities have reportedly begun investigating the Taiwanese semiconductor firm to determine if it has supplied any smartphone or AI chipsets to the Chinese tech giant.

The U.S. is looking for every loophole that can help Huawei in the advanced chipmaking process. A recent report said that the Biden administration may soon add more Chinese firms to the Entity list, blocking the growth of the chip network in China.

Apart from keeping an eye on China, the U.S. is now investigating other foreign suppliers who can lend a hand to Huawei in semiconductor manufacturing.

Inputs reveal that the U.S. Commerce Department started probing TSMC for chip dealings with Huawei. The investigation is in the early stages and aims to check if the chipmaker has been making any AI or phone chips for Huawei for the time being.

If TSMC is found breaching the U.S. export regulations, it might face huge penalties or even a prohibition on using advanced chipmaking tools or techs temporarily.

Under this investigation, the U.S. authorities have targeted the Mate 60 series’ Kirin 5G 9000s chip and recently developed AI Ascend processor. Both these chipsets significantly contribute to China’s progress in the semiconductor industry.

The Commerce Department inquired TSMC about having any direct or indirect (via different names) chip shipments to Huawei in the past or at present. Investigators are also looking into other related aspects like “know-your-customer checks”.

Issues for TSMC

Further details note that the investigation could trouble TSMC to some extent. The Taiwanese chipmaker is one of the key chipset suppliers for U.S. firms.

Huawei AI chips 2026

For instance, Apple and Nvidia mainly rely on TSMC for their processors. Also, the Biden administration was planning a $6.6 billion subsidy for the chipmaker to develop its third fabrication unit in Arizona. However, an investigation could halt benefits for some time.

TSMC responded to this investigation and said that it follows all the U.S. export regulations without fail. Although if there is a problem, then it will take action to guarantee compliance in all possible aspects.

“TSMC is a law-abiding company and we are committed to complying with all applicable regulations. If we have any reason to believe there are issues, we will take prompt action to ensure compliance.”

HuaweiCentral’s Take

The U.S. will try every effort to push back Huawei as done in 2019. But this time, the Chinese OEM is focusing on being self-reliant. A recent report claimed that Huawei Kirin 7nm chip performance can match the level of the 5nm processor of TSMC.

How far the U.S. will stretch this investigation on TSMC chip dealings with Huawei would be worth looking forward to.

Huawei has interestingly hinted at the starting price of the Nova 13 series. As per the revelations, the new smartphones could cost below 3000 yuan. It seems there won’t be much difference between the latest and previous-gen devices in cost.

The Chinese tech giant has shared a new poster on the Huawei Mall for the Nova 13 series. The image highlights the standard and Pro models with a price question:

“Price: ¥2??9/¥3??9 | Pre-order to win a gift | Post your order and stand a chance to win starry handbags”

Note that the 2xx9 yuan price is for standard whereas the 3xx9 yuan is for the Pro variant. It indicates that the Huawei Nova 13 series starting price will be below 3000 yuan. It’s a relief to those who thought the cost may exceed 3000 yuan this time.

Last year, Huawei launched three models in the Nova 12 series: Standard, Pro, and Ultra. A Lite version also accompanied the lineup. These devices start pricing at:

  • Nova 12 Lite (256GB) – 2499 yuan
  • Nova 12 (256GB) – 2999 yuan
  • Nova 12 Pro (256GB) – 3999 yuan
  • Nova 12 Ultra (512GB) – 4699 yuan

Judging from the new posters and price of the Nova 12/12 Pro, it seems the Nova 13 series may bear the same cost tag as its predecessors. To know the exact details, we have to wait till the official unveiling of both smartphones.

South Korea is planning strict measures to block its chipset secrets as well as business leaks worldwide. The government could soon impose “heavier than before” penalties on those who leak regional regulations and chip-related secrets to others.

According to Reuters, the finance minister of South Korea, Choi Sang-mok said that the country is readying strict measures and rules to block chipset and technology leaks in the global market. It is preparing a big-data system as a major safety.

The new “big data” system will lead to useful and stricter rules with tougher punishments for culprits. The penalties under this system are unknown but it will eventually ensure full security of the business secrets and chip tech in the country.

“We will prevent illegal leaks of advanced technologies to raise the global competitiveness of our companies and strengthen technology leadership.” – said Choi.

South Korean government is taking such strict measures following the previous leak cases in the country. Inputs reveal that over 97 attempts have been made in the past five years to leak business secrets and chipset details to other countries.

As noted by the National Intelligence Service, 40 of these leaks were regarding chip manufacturing and its relevant parts. The good news is that these leaks didn’t achieve success. Or else, it would have led to a loss of $16.85 billion to the country.

In September, a South Korean official blamed for stealing chipmaking details from Samsung.  Thus, a few strict measures on this matter are quite necessary.

Over the years, South Korea established around 12 national strategic tech firms that can support the country financially. These include rechargeable batteries, aerospace and artificial intelligence, semiconductors, and more.

These industries also aim to protect and respond actively to global competition and help resolve supply chain problems. It would be worth seeing what new penalties South Korea will take on the chipset and tech leak matter.

US lawmakers are once again up to increase restrictions for Huawei chip technology. Some major U.S. legislators are now calling for tighter export controls on Chinese companies to restrict them from making progress in advanced chipmaking.

Huawei is unable to access high-end chipmaking tools due to U.S. sanctions. Now the foreign authorities are planning more challenges for the company in semiconductor manufacturing. They are pressing Biden to impose more restrictions.

Chairman John Moolenaar and Ranking Member Raja Krishnamoorthi – the members of the House Select Committee on strategic conflicts between the U.S. and China, recently wrote a letter to Gina Raimondo (Commerce Secretary) on Chinese tech progress concerns.

The letter highlights that the Biden administration should increase export controls to block Huawei’s secretive chip network growth. The “clandestine semiconductor facilities” of Huawei will ultimately harm U.S. security on a large scale.

“…Just as you have taken steps to prohibit Huawei from purchasing U.S. chips, it is similarly important and logical to restrict the flow of SME to prevent Huawei from fabricating its chips. Restricting the flow… will send an important signal to… Huawei that the United States will take action to prevent U.S. technology from enabling its problematic technology ambitions.” (via)

According to Bloomberg, Huawei is currently teaming up with Pengxinxu, SwaySure Technology, and Qingdao SiEn to expand its chip network. These firms are free from U.S. restrictions and do not count in the Entity list.

US restrictions Huawei chip

US lawmakers urge tougher restrictions on Huawei chip tech: Report (Image Credits: Huawei)

Huawei also collaborated with the PXW Semiconductor to accelerate its chipmaking process. But later, the U.S. added the respective firm to the entity list, prohibiting it from accessing advanced technologies. Now they are planning the same treatment for the above-mentioned firms to block ways for Huawei.

The Commerce Department has said to respond on this matter soon with their appropriate mediums.

Huawei launched a 7nm chip last year which belongs to the SMIC foundry. Since then, the U.S. started eyeing the OEM for every step it takes in chipmaking.

The U.S. authorities canceled the licenses of many foreign semiconductor firms from selling chipsets or chipmaking equipment to Huawei. ASML is one of the major examples of this aspect. Now lawmakers are urging to ban 120+ Chinese companies and impose fresh restrictions on chip tool sales in China.

Apart from its own efforts, the U.S. is pressuring its neighboring countries to impose the same restrictions on China. Although they didn’t show much interest.

How Huawei will make its steps more firm in the chip tech field amid these US restrictions and export problems would be worth looking forward to.

Huawei may unveil the Hi MateBook 14 notebook by the end of this month. The device has been in rumors since September and it could go official in the upcoming weeks. Apart from the Hi-tagged PC, there could be a new D 16 notebook model.

Weibo tipster @UncleKanshan revealed that Huawei could launch the Hi MateBook 14 PC later this month. It might be available in major stores by October 25th. Meanwhile, the company may release it officially in the last week of this month.

The leak implies that the new notebook will have a 14-inch screen. Due to the “Hi” term, it could be shelved under the WIKO brand in the future. But things aren’t very clear at the moment. Let’s wait for some more days to get exact details on this topic.

A netizen asked if the Hi MateBook will continue the adaptation to Intel and Windows or use HarmonyOS. In response, the tipster confirmed the former option.

Earlier, the Hi MateBook was expected to launch with HarmonyOS PC as the new smart selection product. However, several other inputs mentioned that Huawei’s new computer-dedicated software won’t be launched earlier than Q2 or Q3 2025.

Honor is ready to unveil new top-end smartphones this year. Ahead of that, a new leak is here revealing the screen details of the Honor 300 series. The device may go official next year with some better upgrades over the previous generation models.

SmartPikachu recently noted that the next-gen digital series – Honor 300 might equip smaller screen sizes than its predecessors. The leak adds that these smartphones will launch next year, probably with a new design and surprising features.

The input doesn’t reveal the display panel size. Hence, the exact parameters of the screen are unclear. Although it will likely be less than the 6.7-inch (Honor 200).

A few netizens predicted that the Honor 300 series screen could be around 6.3 or 6.1-inch. Some said that the company could introduce the standard variant with a smaller screen while keeping the high-end variants confined to large display panels.

Small-screen devices may again become a trend soon. Due to less growth and changes in the smartphone market, many tech vendors ditch the small device idea.

One of the examples is the iPhone 13 mini. Apple stopped launching “Mini” models due to a decline in the respective phone’s sales. On the flip side, Samsung continued to impress its customers with the 6.1-inch standard Galaxy S series handsets.

Honor might be planning a new strategy with the smaller screen phones in the consumer market. The company hasn’t confirmed any details regarding the Honor 300 series. Hence, let’s take the current input with a grain of salt.

Huawei is developing a new Kirin 9 series chip for its devices, which could adopt a “1+3+4” octa-core architecture. It will likely be built on a 7nm process. This time, the company has improved its chipset manufacturing for better CPU performance.

FixedFocus notes that the upcoming Huawei Kirin 9 series chip may have a “1+3+4” CPU architecture. It will use one self-developed large core, three medium cores, and 4 small cores. It could also use an improved 7nm Pro Plus chipset platform.

A self-developed large core implies better and higher performance. These cores can easily handle heavy tasks like gaming, video editing, and more. The medium and small cores maintain balance and ensure a reduction in power consumption.

7nm Pro Plus hints at a more enhanced chipset platform. Huawei has said to improve its existing 7nm technology rather than focusing on the new 5nm or 3nm ones. The 7nm Pro Plus refers to the company’s new improvements in chip making.

The leak also implies that the OEM may use 8, 6, and 4 channels as per the chipset yield. Here, channels refer to a separate path that enables the CPU to access memory. The number of channels in a processor helps it to interact with memory modules.

For instance, the Quad Channel has four channels to associate with the memory module. The “6-channel and 8-channel” mainly used for servers. A high number of channels also increases bandwidth and results in dynamic computing performance.

Some netizens predicted that Huawei may bring two new Kirin chips for its Mate 70 series. The standard Mate 70 model could use the new Kirin 9 chip. Meanwhile, the high-end variants will likely adopt a 5nm processor with upgraded performance.

The prediction might be accurate to some extent. Huawei has been long-rumored to develop new Kirin chipsets for its flagship products. It seems the processors are in the final development phase and could show up by the end of this year.

Other details about the new chipset such as its name, official parameters, and internal changes are still unknown. Although we will discover these inputs probably with the Mate 70 series launch, seemingly scheduled for November 2024.
