South Korea is planning strict measures to block its chipset secrets as well as business leaks worldwide. The government could soon impose “heavier than before” penalties on those who leak regional regulations and chip-related secrets to others.

According to Reuters, the finance minister of South Korea, Choi Sang-mok said that the country is readying strict measures and rules to block chipset and technology leaks in the global market. It is preparing a big-data system as a major safety.

The new “big data” system will lead to useful and stricter rules with tougher punishments for culprits. The penalties under this system are unknown but it will eventually ensure full security of the business secrets and chip tech in the country.

“We will prevent illegal leaks of advanced technologies to raise the global competitiveness of our companies and strengthen technology leadership.” – said Choi.

South Korean government is taking such strict measures following the previous leak cases in the country. Inputs reveal that over 97 attempts have been made in the past five years to leak business secrets and chipset details to other countries.

As noted by the National Intelligence Service, 40 of these leaks were regarding chip manufacturing and its relevant parts. The good news is that these leaks didn’t achieve success. Or else, it would have led to a loss of $16.85 billion to the country.

In September, a South Korean official blamed for stealing chipmaking details from Samsung.  Thus, a few strict measures on this matter are quite necessary.

Over the years, South Korea established around 12 national strategic tech firms that can support the country financially. These include rechargeable batteries, aerospace and artificial intelligence, semiconductors, and more.

These industries also aim to protect and respond actively to global competition and help resolve supply chain problems. It would be worth seeing what new penalties South Korea will take on the chipset and tech leak matter.

China is now pressuring its companies to purchase Huawei and other local AI chips instead of Nvidia H20. The Chinese authorities are taking this measure to counter the tough U.S. trade restrictions and support the native semiconductor industry.

As noted by Bloomberg, Chinese regulators directed local firms and enterprise customers to prohibit Nvidia H20 usage. The H20 is a China-specific chip. It’s a special but low-end version of the Nvidia H800. The chip is used to train AI models.

Following the U.S. ban, Chinese companies relied on Nvidia’s chipsets for AI models and other related technologies. However, China now aims to support its native techs and firms over U.S. products, increasing its self-reliance and economic growth.

Inputs reveal that Chinese regulators like the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology issued a set of new rules under ‘window guidance’. It encourages the firms to switch to local chipmakers and reduce the Nvidia use as far as possible.

Huawei and Cambricon are currently the top AI chipmakers in China. A direct prohibition of Nvidia chips in the region will ultimately help the native chip producers to increase their market share. The aim is to support native AI startups over foreign firms.

People related to the matter say that it’s not possible to completely ban Nvidia chips in the region. Many companies are looking to develop the best AI system which requires foreign processors instead of local options. But the condition is that the Nvidia chips’ usage should be minimal.

Another input notes that Nvidia shares fell to 3.9% ($119.26) by Friday. When asked to the CEO of Nvidia – Jensen Huang about the entire matter, he said:

“The first thing we have to do is comply with whatever policies and regulations that are being imposed. And, meanwhile, do the best we can to compete in the markets that we serve. We have a lot of customers there that depend on us, and we’ll do our best to support them.”

While Chinese chipmakers are readying alternatives to Nvidia’s chips, local companies are stockpiling foreign chips before the U.S. export controls reach a new level. For instance, ByteDance ordered 200000+ Nvidia H20 chips this year worth $2 billion.

Huawei, on the other hand, is also taking major steps in this matter. After months of internal testing, the company is now sending its Ascend 910C AI chip samples to top tech firms, expanding its strength in the AI chip sector. Read More…

It would be worth seeing how the next-gen Huawei AI chips will counterattack Nvidia H20 processors.

Huawei did transfer the AITO trademark to SERES but it will continue to play a vital role in AITO car-making. That gets clear with the latest spy shots of alleged Huawei AITO M8 SUV. After the M7 and M9, SERES might launch the 8-number series.

Some tipsters have shared the spy shots of a new SUV being tested on the road. The overall design and posture of the smart car appeared similar to the newly launched M9 model. Meanwhile, the size seemingly ranges between the M7 and M9 variants.

Other details count various straight lines on the car layout. It may also use the AITO M9-like taillight capability to provide a unique lighting pattern when driving. Note that the car doesn’t show any LiDAR unit, unlike the AITO M9 SUV.

It means the automobile won’t bear advanced techs or specifications. It may use the Huawei ADS 3.0 SE capability. This solution is also known as the Pure Vision intelligent driving system. It doesn’t pack major changes but brings efficient features.

ADS 3.0 SE supports smart driving assistance for highways or urban expressways with ramp access/exits. We may find more tweaks on this topic in future.

The spy shots further hint that the Huawei-powered AITO M8 SUV could be a five-seater product. A few interior images indicate that the new model uses the same tri-display design as the M9. The overall structure is quite similar to the AITO M9.

Last month, Huawei sold its AITO trademark and some patents to SERES for $343 million. The company did so to comply with Chinese rules. As per the information, the brand manufacturer and owner should belong to the same entity.

Huawei has said that it will continue to serve as a solution supplier and won’t jump into car making. Hence, it transferred the trademark to SERES. Read More…

A new report says that eleven EU countries have banned Huawei and its network equipment for 5G security concerns. The number is less than half of EU member states who decided to remove the Chinese machinery from their core network.

According to Euronews, a European Commission spokesperson stated that only eleven EU countries have restricted companies like Huawei and ZTE for 5G network security. Others are still planning how to execute the rip-and-replace program.

Even though most countries have adopted the rules to restrict Chinese 5G network providers, these efforts don’t seem enough. One of the EU officials said that the Commission is considering tightening the rules in case of a lack of obedience.

It looks like not many countries are interested in replacing the existing 5G network equipment with a new one. The two main factors behind this theory are Time and Expense. The EU Commission spokesperson further said that:

“One new country has joined the list since last February, and a few more countries are currently in the process of doing so.”

EU Countries:

Regardless of Commission concerns, various EU countries continue to collaborate with Huawei. Italy for instance, distanced itself from Huawei for its 5G network in 2020 but joined forces last month for food safety, EVs, and energy matters.

Huawei EU 5G security

Less than half of EU countries ban Huawei for 5G security concerns: Report (Image Credits: Huawei)

Inputs reveal that Italian Prime Minister – Giorgi Meloni visited China in July to pen down a strategic partnership on EVs. A major reason behind this agreement was the provisional tariffs of 37.6% imposed on the China-made vehicles.

Germany, on the other hand, said to remove the network completely by 2029. After several months and a careful examination of China-made 5G network equipment, Interior Minister Nancy Faeser said:

“We are protecting the central nervous system of Germany for businesses and the communications of citizens, companies, and the state.”

Slovenian is one of those countries that didn’t impose a ban directly on Huawei. If not completely, it’s still linked with Chinese network suppliers. Thus, the EU Commission and countries have to do a lot of work to make all the 27 member states follow the Rip and Replace program.

Deutsche Telekom – a German telecommunications provider recently said that stripping off Huawei and Chinese equipment from the 5G network could be difficult. The entire procedure is time-consuming and may affect many German operators.

Germany has started removing China-made network equipment from its 5G market. The government has commanded all telecom operators to fully rip off Huawei, ZTE, and other Chinese kits from their network by 2029, completing half of it by 2026.

Among various German operators, Deutsche Telekom also accepted this order and began working to comply with the UK rules. But the process isn’t as easy as it looks.

The CEO of Deutsche Telekom – Tim Höttges said that pulling out Huawei 5G network equipment needs time, changes, and high skills. He said that after the country will need better and independent software to meet network requirements.

“It requires a lot of changes and a lot of new skills within our company to fulfill this agreement with the government. We have to develop sovereign software to steer and configure all antennas. All the software required to run the access nodes has to come from the operators. We aren’t using it from third parties anymore.” – said Tim Höttges.

Tim said that the company has already freed most of its core network from Chinese equipment. Yet a complete elimination requires more time, till 2029. Meeting the deadline is far more challenging as it requires advanced skills for better replacement.

Deutsche Telekom’s CEO put forth these points while announcing the firm’s performance in the first half of this year. He further said that the new agreement with the German government is mainly to secure the nation’s privacy. Yet, it will have a massive impact on how DT runs its network infrastructure in the market.

Even though German operators are working as per the “Rip and Replace” program, they know the consequences well. Apart from pulling off Chinese kits from the 5G network, DT is making efficient software for the antenna network.

Tim further stated that Deutsche Telekom is adapting to O-RAN tech as it could be a savior. It would like to have 3000+ phone sites by 2026. The company is also joining hands with new suppliers like Nokia, Samsung, and more for better help.

Höttges said that the overall price of the new software might range up to a triple million number. The price is another matter of concern that the firm has to look after while removing Huawei, ZTE, and other China-made 5G equipment from its core network.

A new report says that Huawei, Baidu, and some other Chinese firms are stocking up Samsung HBM chips. The increasing U.S. restrictions on trade exports seem a major reason for the quick and more purchase of the South Korean firm’s AI chipsets.

The story began when the U.S. government started planning to further tighten export controls for China by this month. As per the new regulations, Chinese companies won’t be able to access high-bandwidth memory processors from foreign suppliers.

As a result, many Chinese firms including Huawei and Baidu rushed to stockpile Samsung HBM chips in advance. The process already started at the onset of this year. Although now, the OEMs are gearing up this AI chip purchase for a safe hand.

Thus, China now holds 30% of Samsung AI processors as of the first half of 2024. Despite harsh U.S. restrictions, Huawei and other Chinese firms are constantly making efforts to move ahead on the path of advancement and meet their AI tech goals.

When asked the U.S. Department of Commerce about their new trade export rules, it refused to comment. However, the only cause to upgrade these rules is to protect the U.S. national security as well as safeguard their technological ecosystem.

HBM or high bandwidth memory chip delivers ultra-wide communication coverage with low power consumption. Hence, offering efficient performance.

It overlaps many layers of memory chips to lessen footprints for conjunction via high-performance graphics accelerators, network devices, and high-performance data centers. These chips are important for developing advanced AI processors.

Apart from Samsung, there are two more major HBM producers – SK Hynix and Micron Technology. While the most advanced HBM version is HBM3E, China is focusing on the 2E model for slow but effective growth in the AI field.

Huawei so far, has been using Samsung HBM chipsets for its Ascend AI processors. At the same time, the company is in the headlines for building its own high-bandwidth memory chipsets. The tech giant might achieve this goal by 2026.

It also joined forces with new partners to get help for AI projects. Yet how the company would make things better amid growing U.S.-China chip tensions is worth looking forward to.

WhatsApp is testing a new “Description” feature for Community groups. As the term suggests, this addition will enable admins to add relevant or small info about the group’s purpose or rules and regulations that should be followed by members.

A description feature is already available in the normal group chats. The tool allows you to add a brief text as the introduction or an overview of the group. It remains visible to group members and other people invited to the respective group.

Now the company is bringing this functionality to other sections of the app. Spotted in the Android beta 2.24.16.12 version, WhatsApp is rolling out description prompts for Community groups. The update is available via the Google Play Beta Program.

Group Description is appearing as an optional feature in Community. It asks participants to describe what their group is about and helps people know what to expect or whether to join the group. One can add guidelines for better interaction.

Huawei Smart Automotive Solution Business Chairman Yu Chengdong has cleared the mist on the ‘AITO trademarks transfer to SERES’ deal. The executive explained why the company sell its patents and AITO-related trademark to the car’s manufacturer.

Yu described that Huawei transferred AITO trademarks to SERES to comply with Chinese regulations. As per laws, the brand manufacturer and the owner should belong to the same company. It also requires the producer to own the particular brand.

Following these rules, Huawei decided to hand over the AITO brand as well as its patents to SERES. Not only AITO, but Huawei has also given out some more brands’ trademarks to their respective companies. Chery and BAIC are also on this list.

The executive further reveals that Huawei has spent a lot (more than 10 billion yuan) on its AITO trademark. But the company is selling it at a low price for a beneficial deal.

“Huawei sold AITO to SERES at a very low price because of requirements from national laws and regulations that auto brands need to be owned by the manufacturers.” – said Yu Chengdong.

Earlier, SERES said that the new trademark-selling deal won’t affect the relationship between the two companies. In fact, it’s a new start that will strengthen the bond between Huawei and SERES Automotive technology for future-coming car models.

A SERES spokesperson also mentioned that Huawei will also benefit from this deal. The Chinese tech will get a certain amount with every AITO car sold in the market. Although this amount is unknown due to core business secret. Read More…

With the HarmonyOS NEXT beta unveiling, Huawei brought in a creative cloud rendering technology that aims to boost the gaming experience. Using the latest capability, the software version makes your game more realistic and immersive.

At the HDC 2024 conference, the Chinese phone maker described how the new OS version fully optimizes the system and third-party app experiences.

The company has packed HarmonyOS NEXT with various app-oriented capabilities that not only make them useful but secure too. Starting with the cloud rendering technology, Huawei says that HarmonyOS NEXT will enhance the gaming experience.

Cloud rendering helps in achieving real-time vibrant renders of over 1 billion rays per second. Real-time rendering refers to a technique that renders 3D images or animations at once. Thus it makes the 3D design more realistic and interactive.

1. App Continuation: This feature will enable users to switch an app from one device to another in one click, without pausing the ongoing operations.

2. Cross-device creation: Apps automatically recommend ideas for tasks based on the device. Not only systems but third-party apps can also fetch the ‘multi-device’ experience.

3. Seamless connection: HarmonyOS NEXT quickly connects apps between devices and allows free content-sharing. Apps like WPS Office can support a copy-paste feature across devices with a common gallery.

4. Upgraded Celia App: Huawei has given a new makeover to the Celia app and made it even more useful. Powered by Pangu Large Model 5.0, the voice assistant bears 23 TOP scene perceptions. This makes it 90% more efficient in planning and reasoning.

The company has also integrated it into the top navigation bar. You don’t have to command Celia to store anything. Just drag the information to the navigation bar.
