Huawei could unveil the Mate 70 series next month and two of these models will bring a major change in appearance compared to their predecessors.

Weibo tipster Pikachu said two new Mate 70 phones will equip slightly curved large screens with 1.5k resolution. The Mate 60 and Mate 60 Pro released last year feature 6.69-inch and 6.82-inch screens respectively.

These two come with 2688 x 1216 pixels and 2720 x 1260 pixels resolution respectively. Other technologies in the display include a 1-120 Hz LTPO adaptive refresh rate, OLED panel, 1440Hz high-frequency PWM dimming, and 300Hz touch sampling rate.

These new models will equip a right-angle middle frame design, which will be a major shift in Huawei’s design strategy for the Mate series.

This design refers to the smartphone’s edge where the front and the back panels meet. Instead of matching the curved back and front panel edges, these frame edges form a 90-degree angle. Simply put, this angle shows a more flat frame than previous flagships.

Since the Mate 10 lineup, the middle frame of Mate devices has turned rounder and seamless supporting the display curve. Mate 30 Pro is the company’s largest curved-edge display smartphone ever built.

However, the trend started to change with the Mate 50 Pro lineup, stepping away from waterfall screens. Instead, Huawei has utilized the screen ratio and made it look less curved on all sides. This new design language has provided the device with a clean look and stability improvements.

Mate 60 series took this strategy to a new level and shrank the curved edges to the lowest on all four sides. However, the frame is somewhat curved to support the rear panel. Furthermore, the body is slightly wide, which may not be comfortable for some users.

Installing a right-angle frame will help to improve the grip and reduce the bezels around the screen, which is widely visible from the front.

Still, there’s confirmation about the device’s identity but these could be Mate 70 and Mate 70 Pro.

Huawei is launching HarmonyOS NEXT public beta in the next few days and its new App Clone feature can do something new for people who like multitask a lot.

This App Clone feature is exclusive to HarmonyOS NEXT and has been spotted with a recently closed beta rollout. It can create up to 5 clones of the original app within the same device.

These apps will open and function separately based on their features. The company has also confirmed that cloned apps will be listed on the app clone settings. These can be deleted in case you no longer need them.

With that being said, you can create icons for these apps on the home screen altogether. A little blue icon on the bottom right corner of the app icons is confirmed as a clone.

The feature reminds me of App Twin, a capability first introduced with EMUI smartphone years ago. This feature creates two instances of the same app and allows you to log in with two different accounts (for that app).

This feature was launched for social media apps such as FaceBook and WhatsApp. Upgrading such capability and bringing a more aggressive cloning capability is new for HarmonyOS NEXT. Although app clones may not fancy all but it will be useful for some users.

HarmonyOS NEXT is a new operating system based on HarmonyOS and developed by Huawei. The Chinese tech maker has polished many core software technologies for this new OS and built for native applications.

This new HarmonyOS has been under testing since early 2024 and it’ll enter public test on October 8.

Huawei is sending its AI chip samples to top tech companies in China to expand its footprint in AI solutions and take on Nvidia’s Chinese clients as well as market share.

SCMP reports Huawei is testing new AI chips with clients in China including the firms searching for Nvidia alternatives for high-end servers. The Chinese tech giant is packing Ascend 910C chips for large server firms covering hardware testing and configuration.

Nvidia is the most popular AI chip seller in the global AI market including China. However, US sanctions on AI chips have barred the company from selling flagship chipsets to Chinese companies.

Since August 2022, the US restricted Nvidia A100 and H100 exports to China. These two are the most popular AI solutions for large language models and generative AI. The company later modified these two chips to a lower-end version A800 and H800, which got banned in October.

Nvidia has modified its chipsets for Chinese clients and developed H20, L20, and L2 GPUs to comply with US export guidelines and maintain its edge in the Chinese AI market.

Given this opportunity, Huawei started selling Ascend 910B AI chipset last year. It has changed the previous Ascend AI architecture and introduced this new version with various performance improvements to compete against Nvidia’s top sellers.

It also allowed the Chinese company to collect some early customers. However, the next version is expected to widen this reach in the high-end AI chipset market.

Huawei reportedly testing Ascend 910C for the past six months and cooperating with the Chinese tech industry to comply with the specifications as much as possible. Some of these potential customers ByteDance, Baidu, and China Mobile have already received the Ascend 910C chipset for testing.

These companies have placed large numbers of orders for the chip when it goes into production. However, Huawei spilled no beans on this matter and kept the AI chip progress low-key. The report also mentioned that the company could start shipping later this year.

Yu Chengdong, Executive Director, Chairman of Consumer BG, and Chairman of Smart Automotive Solutions BU said that Huawei will top the Chinese flagship car market with its self-driving technologies.

Huawei uses HarmonyOS smart automotive software solution to provide self-driving technologies for car companies across the Chinese automotive industry.

Yu Chengdong said that HarmonyOS for smart cars could become the number one solution in the high-end car market in the next five years. The company has already integrated its solutions in the sub 500,000 yuan range and now it’s going for 1 million yuan and above market.

The automotive chief said Huawei makes cars with several brands including Aito, BAIC, and others. He pointed out that the company has already become successful in the high-end market citing the Wenjie M9 vehicle with robust sales.

“Although the four-world cars are made by different car manufacturers, Huawei is in control of the experience and underlying technology,” said Chengdong.

ADS 3.0

Earlier this year, Huawei introduced Automated Driving System (ADS) 3.0 for smart cars. The solution uses LiDAR + Camera solutions. On the other hand, rivals such as Tesla are considering using camera solutions and have eliminated LiDAR a few years ago.

Yu Chengdong said camera solutions without LiDAR will leave the camera blinded. He said cameras have limits and it could become hard for the car to maintain its senses in unfavorable weather.

The system brings smart features such as enhanced parking features. It has also added AI safety checks to keep the car functioning in most scenarios. To conclude, the automotive chief said that ADS 3.0 is not L3 yet but is designed based on L3 standards.

Huawei Nova 13 series will launch next month and now we have some input about the standard model including its camera and color specifications.

Tipster FixedFocus said the standard Huawei Nova 13 will equip a single 60 MP front-facing camera to take selfies. On the other hand, The rear side of the device will carry a 50MP camera system.

These specs are identical to the Nova 12 smartphone, which has a dual rear camera setup including a 50MP wide camera with f/1.9 aperture, RYYB color filter array, and an 8MP ultra wide-angle camera. The front side has a 60MP ultra wide-angle camera with f/2.4 aperture.

It’s obvious the company may not boast any major upgrade to the standard model. Instead, it could change the device’s outlook and make it even more stylish than its predecessor.

Huawei Nova 12 featured a 6.7-inch OLED flat screen with 120Hz refresh rate and display turbo technology. The screen also has an AI HDR image with high dynamic range as well as high pixel resolution. To be mentioned, the screen has lower display bezels all around to provide a high-quality viewing experience.

The standard model packs a 4600mAh battery with 100W in-box charger. It could be continued with this year’s Nova 13 standard device.

Colors

The tipster also suggests that this year’s standard Nova will have four colors – black green purple and white. While the Nova 12 has Blue, Black, and white with matching background textures.

Huawei Nova 13 series

The lineup is expected to cover four models including a Nova 13 Vitality Edition, Nova 13, Nova 13 Pro, and Nova 13 Ultra. The top-end variants will upgrade the satellite connectivity and provide better performance with the new Kirin chipset.

The imaging system will also improve compared to the previous model. Reports suggest that the Huawei Nova 13 series could launch in October.

A Huawei smartphone has been leaked in a live image and the camera side suggests, it might belong to the upcoming Mate 70 RS Ultimate Design.

The source of the image is unknown but it appears to be a Huawei device for certain. Meanwhile, there are some elements in the photograph that we can explore.

The phone is covered with a protective case but the camera opening is octagonal. Over the past years, Huawei has been using this camera outlook to achieve distinctiveness for Mate RS models. On the other hand, standard and Pro models use round design.

Coming to the camera count, the image shows at least five openings and additional sensors. Such camera count also doesn’t belong to the regular or Pro model.

I can confirm that both, Huawei Mate 50 RS or 60 RS doesn’t have such a camera system or any previous RS family models except the Mate 40 RS Porsche Design.

The phone introduced five rear lenses including a wide camera, an ultra wide-angle camera, a telephoto camera, a periscope telephoto camera, and a 3D depth lens.

However, Huawei Mate 50 RS and 60RS didn’t follow this five-camera strategy.

There’s more, the right side of the phone’s frame has a power button and volume adjustment keys. The screen is widely curved, which is a bit suspicious.

Previous reports speculate that Huawei will upgrade the Mate 70 RS screen and increase its size. Mate 60 RS display measures 6.82 inches and an upgrade could take it to 6.9 for this new device.

Furthermore, the 60 RS featured a quad curve display similar to the Mate 60 Pro. It’s uncertain, whether Huawei will switch to more curved edges than the Mate 70 Pro.

The top of the phone has three openings on the side, the wide one is for speakers and the two others are infrared sensors and a secondary microphone.

Huawei Mate RS phones are designed with premium materials and this year’s Mate 70 RS won’t be an exception to this tradition.

With all these facts, the live image of the Huawei Mate 70 RS Ultimate Design remains inconclusive. However, we’ll have to wait until a clear picture emerges.

Suppliers have started shipping the Mate 70 series components to Huawei and it’s expected to enter the assembly line very soon to meet the launch schedule.

This year, the Mate 70 flagship has been delayed significantly. The reason for that could be a busy schedule including the recently introduced tri-fold Mate XT.

However, it could also mean that the company is buying much-needed time to gather all required components for sufficient smartphone supplies.

A previous report revealed that the Chinese tech maker is improving the hardware and software experience of the next-gen Mate series smartphones. Therefore, the unveiling has slipped from the prior date.

On the other hand, Huawei’s supply chain is making separate progress and confirmed that the work on the new Mate 70 components achieved a new milestone.

A supplier told Chinese media that the mass production for ordered components had already started this month (September). The supply chain sources also speculate that the new smartphones could launch in November. The people related to this matter said that more new progress is expected by the end of October.

Last year, Huawei released the Mate 60 series in August to compete against the iPhone 15 launch and the unveiling was quite successful. This year, the slot was claimed by Mate XT, and the Nova 13 series is expected to launch in October.

Huawei Mate 70

Previous reports suggest that the Huawei Mate 70 lineup will use 3D facial recognition technology and a quad curve display similar to the previous generation.

The company has planned to release both small and large screen variants. The camera is likely to remain circled in the top center of the rear panel and it will use a single periscope design.

Furthermore, Huawei Mate 70 will introduce new materials and design schemes for a better user experience. It will also become the first smartphone to pre-equip the new HarmonyOS NEXT operating system.

Honor has registered the ‘Magic Next’ trademark in China which could rival its former parent Huawei HarmonyOS in the field of operating systems.

This step could be a follow-up for HarmonyOS NEXT, Huawei’s new route to native application and removing Android app support from its device ecosystem. Over the past two years, the company has cooperated with various major software developers in the Chinese industry.

This will upgrade the existing HarmonyOS operating system to a new level and is expected to improve the app’s performance.

Since its introduction, Honor has been operating under Huawei. Following the separation of both firms in 2020, Honor started applying its learning from its former parent in the smartphone industry.

In November 2020, the phone maker launched MagicOS, upgrading from Magic UI and enabling cross-device features for its device ecosystem including tablets, smartwatches, and smartphones.

This strategy is quite similar to HarmonyOS. However, MagicOS has Android underneath and supports Google Mobile Services (GMS).

The user interface also mimics HarmonyOS and so goes for the design. So, it won’t be a surprising element if the Chinese company uses Magic Next as an operating system.

Magic Next

The trademark application is under review and it is categorized as:

  • Downloadable computer programs
  • Tablet computers
  • Smartwatches (data processing)
  • Laptop computers
  • Smart glasses (data processing)
  • Downloadable mobile phone applications
  • Mobile phone cases
  • Smartphones
  • Televisions
  • Speaker cabinets
  • Headphones
  • Cameras (photography)
  • USB cables
  • Video displays
  • Electronic chips
  • Sensors
  • Batteries

Magic is also used in devices such as Honor Magic smartphones, tablets, and smartwatches.

Huawei has announced Watch GT 5 series for global customers and it’s revealed that these smartwatches are packed with the HarmonyOS 5.0 operating system.

This revelation is interesting as the company has only released HarmonyOS 4.x for smartwatches. Its recent smartwatches come with HarmonyOS 4 and upgraded to 4.2 with a software update.

That explains that the Huawei Watch GT 5 series is the first to run HarmonyOS 5 out of the box.

This lineup consists of two models – GT 5 and GT 5 Pro. Both 41mm and 46mm versions come with different watch faces and themes to customize the user experience. Some of these themes are interactive and provide you with touch interactions.

The UI animations are improved as well. These watches are packed with new fitness features. That includes Trail run mode supporting segment-based navigation, off-course alerts, contour lines, and crown-controlled zoomable maps.

The next three months will be packed with new Huawei smart devices launch events including the Nova 13 series, Mate 70 lineup, and Mate X6 dual foldable.

On September 10, Huawei unveiled a tri-fold Mate XT Ultimate Design smartphone, followed by new smartwatches for global customers on September 19. Then, an Autumn event is also set for Chinese customers on September 24.

Tipster DigitalChatStation has shared a roadmap of the alleged launch timeline for these upcoming devices starting with Nova 13.

It is said that the Huawei Nova 13 series will be released in October. Last year, Huawei revealed the Nova 12 lineup in December and it was the first Nova smartphone featuring a new Kirin chipset. Previous Nova devices only used Snapdragon chipset (after the US ban).

The lineup has three devices – Nova 12, 12 Pro, and 12 Ultra. These three phones come with a 60MP front-facing and a 50MP rear camera system.

The company is likely to bring similar models this year with the Nova 13, Nova 13 Pro, and Nova 13 Ultra. These will offer slightly improved specifications and a new design scheme.

Mate 70 and Mate X6

Huawei is saving its flagship Mate 70 series for later this year and it could be unveiled in November alongside Mate X6.

In August 2023, Huawei released Mate 60 and 60 Pro through a Pioneer program. Allowing customers to buy this new device without organizing a video conference. This was the first lineup in four years to feature a new Kirin chipset.

Previous reports suggest that Huawei has new plans for the Mate 70 series and it will bring a couple of new technologies to reflect the hardware and software side of the devices.

On the other hand, Huawei Mate X6 will equip a dual-fold experience for those who want to upgrade from the Mate X5 released last year.

For now, Huawei has not officially announced the Nova 13 launch in October of the later flagship devices. However, we’ll keep you posted with new revelations on this matter.
