Huawei is issuing a new notice for its app developers that says the all-new HarmonyOS NEXT AppGallery will only support API 12 apps. App makers should upgrade to the new DevEco Studio NEXT release before the first week of next month.

The company is informing its app developers about the new HarmonyOS NEXT API 12 SDK. As per the official notice, Huawei will only support API 12-based apps on the HarmonyOS NEXT AppGallery, starting from November 10, 2024.

Other applications based on the beta API 12 or below builds won’t be listed on the AppGallery. Hence, developers should update their apps to the latest SDK version at the earliest. Or else, their applications may face restriction problems.

“Starting from November 10, 2024, Huawei AppGallery on HarmonyOS NEXT will only support API 12 apps that have integrated Release SDK and Beta apps of API 12 or below will be restricted. Please complete the version update as soon as possible. Thank you for your cooperation and support!.”

API (Application Programming Interface) and SDK (Software Development Kit) are significant tools for developers to build apps. In the latest API 12 release, Huawei made amendments that make apps more compatible with HarmonyOS NEXT.

Inputs further reveal that Huawei has released the DevEco Studio NEXT 5.0.3.900 version. It is a dedicated development platform for apps and services. It offers multiple features and supports various programming languages, the multi-device preview of UI codes, and other significant tools for app making.

The company is now asking its developers to download the new DevEco Studio version for recompiling and updating their applications with the API 12 SDK.

Changes:

  • ohpm-repo adds the use_reverse_proxy field to configure whether to use the reverse proxy option.
  • The API capability level of this version is API 12 release

Doing so will make the native apps more compatible with HarmonyOS NEXT as well as enable users to easily manage them on their devices. It will also make them stable and more responsive towards new features and existing services.

Huawei has removed most of the Tencent video games from the top game apps list of AppGallery, as per a new report. The alleged action hints at further clashes between the two Chinese tech makers, following the pull-off of the famous DnF gaming app.

According to the report, AppGallery has excluded several Tencent video games from the top gaming app ranking. On exploration, users may now only find three NetEase games at the top. These are Eggy Party, Identity V, and Fantasy Westward Journey.

Huawei AppGallery game ranking for June 18 showed two Tencent games (DnF at first and The Golden Spatula at eighth place) in the top 10 list, implying the end of a dispute between the firms. These were the bestselling game apps in the AppGallery.

But the latest insights hint that there’s still more to resolve between these two tech makers. Huawei and Tencent have been clashing over apps for a long time. Starting on January 1, 2021, the former excluded some of the latter’s apps from its AppGallery.

Removal of games like Tencent’s Honour of Kings ( a popular gaming app) shocked consumers as Huawei held 43% of the Android smartphone market back then.

Although these games came back on the AppGallery within a few hours. When asked to Huawei and Tencent about this case, they responded that there aren’t any clashes between the two companies and they are bonded in “friendly negotiations”.

Things again drifted apart last month when the app developer pulled out its famed game “DnF (Dungeon & Fighter) from the AppGallery. The app alone collects $826 million from various app stores like OPPO, Vivo, as well as Huawei.

Tencent explained that the reason behind DnF’s removal from Huawei’s AppGallery is the contract expiration. According to details, the contract with Chinese companies expired within a month after the respective video game launched in the market.

Huawei and Tencent’s current scenario clues at deepening of disputes between the two tech giants. However, these conditions might turn positive in the time ahead, following HarmonyOS NEXT expansion to the app ecosystem.

Earlier this month, Huawei’s Consumer Business CEO said that Huawei is returning to the smartphone market at full capacity. And it leads us to the question, of whether Huawei could regain a good position in the global smartphone market without Google apps. You can participate in the poll linked below and share your own opinion on this matter. Let’s dive into this.

To achieve this task, Huawei currently needs to resolve the following challenges – supply chain, price, and software.

Supply Chain:

In 2019, Huawei was blocked by the US, which prohibits the company from purchasing important electronic goods including 5G chipsets. Although, Huawei can design the chip but can’t print them. Similarly, Huawei had to face issues in gathering other electronic components including display, camera, and network components.

Throughout the past three years, Huawei only worked with supply chain and industry partners in China. And 2022 was quite successful for the company, which helped it to access most of its components domestically.

Still, the impact of dropping the 5G network in phones had a wide effect on Huawei smartphone sales. But reports indicate that Huawei is also working on this issue and there’s a good chance to see a 5G phone later this year or by the next year.

Outside of China, Huawei also needs a good supply in order to distribute across different markets. This could only be possible with an easy-to-access supply chain so that you can cut the price and make it reasonable for the customers.

Price:

Price is a key factor in selling and buying new smartphones. Huawei needs to increase its segments and phone portfolio for global customers. Even if it can’t do it rapidly, a gradual expansion is worth trying.

Global users keep on exploring interesting options to switch from their existing brand and price is an attractive viewpoint. Even the flagship, Huawei Mate 50 Pro was overpriced without 5G. On the other hand, the Huawei Mate 20 series sold millions of units and ranked below only the Huawei P30 series. Market demand changes according to current technologies and Huawei needs to adopt new tactics to promote new devices. Therefore, it can’t rely only on flagship phones.

Introducing more smartphones in different price ranges will help the company to grow its appearance back into the consumer world.

Software:

This is a major issue, which needs proper attention from the Huawei software developers. The tech maker now stands as the slowest software update provider with EMUI 13 release. On the other hand, Huawei is providing full support for its Chinese users. HarmonyOS has become one of the biggest success stories for Huawei but it remains inside the Chinese territory.

Hence, Huawei global users keep on waiting for new updates, as they delay for even months in some cases. Many of the recent smartphones are not even mentioned in the EMUI 13 upgrade plan. Therefore, a robust software rollout and security release system is required for a better user experience.

Since Huawei sells phones without Google apps, it needs to partner with major developers to bring big apps and games to AppGallery. We observe that the app distribution platform has increased its app portfolio but there’s more that is need to be done.

Competition:

Huawei should complete these challenging steps and then compete against the current reign of top giants including Samsung, Apple, Oppo, Vivo, and Xiaomi. These companies are ruling supreme after Huawei’s outcast in 2020.

Since they still operating with a fast supply chain, good price options (except Apple), and better software capabilities, Huawei need to excel on all sides to regain its footprint in the global smartphone market.

Huawei has shared some fresh efforts of AppGallery to make it better than the Android Play Store and Apple’s App Store.

Jaime Gonzalo, Vice President of Huawei mobile services Europe revealed various aspects of the AppGallery including its effort to stand over competitors.

He said AppGallery comes with several unique features, different from other app marketplaces. It is a trusted platform for users to download a variety of global and local apps.

Huawei chief mentioned that AppGallery has deals, offers, discounts, welcome packages, and lucky draws. These are alluring and AppGallery users find them useful, added Gonzalo.

Huawei is focusing on providing high-quality apps featuring new and powerful user experiences. For that, the company has upgraded its app submission and evaluation process for the platform.

Huawei AppGallery

Developers will have to develop better apps to ensure quality and reliability. This will also raise the count of trustworthy and well-designed apps and games on AppGallery.

Huawei said it is working with global developers to increase more global and local popular apps available on the platform. Currently, AppGallery hosts apps across 18 categories based on different requirements and scenarios.

The Huawei VP also talked about the security and privacy of the platform to provide safe and secure app downloads. The platform has mechanisms including developer real-name verification, a four-step review process, and download and installation protection. There’s also a prevention mechanism for secure app operation to ensure app safety.

That’s not it, Huawei is also in the frontier alongside developers to provide extensive support. These include services, support, resources, and tools to develop better apps.

Initiatives such as Huawei Global App Innovation Contest (Apps UP), Shining Star Program, Huawei Developer Groups (HDG), and others provide incentives to support their innovation on AppGallery.

These are pretty amazing efforts made by AppGallery and Huawei is actively working in order to make it a competitor of Play Store and Apple App Store.
